3 times 'mankading' made headlines
The match between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab was a thriller, but the game will be remembered for the major incident which involved King XI Punjab captain Ravichandran Ashwin and Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler. The incident took place in the 13th over of the second innings when Ashwin appealed for Mankading against Jos Buttler.
The matter went to the third umpire and Buttler was adjudged out by the third umpire.
Since then, the incident has caused a major uproar in the cricketing world with many ex and current cricketers having contrasting views on the way Buttler was given out.
Ashwin defended his decision in the post-match press conference, saying, "Look, it was very instinctive. It was not planned or anything like that. It's there within the rules of the game. I don't understand where the spirit of the game comes. Naturally, if it's there in the rules it's there.
The law 41.16, that was amended in April 2017, states: "If the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out."
However, it's not for the first time in cricket that a batsman has been given out for mankading. Here are the 3 previous such incidents.
#3 Richard Ngarava by Keemo Paul
The incident took place in the group game between West Indies and Zimbabwe in the under-19 World Cup when West Indies seamer Keemo Paul mankaded the last Zimbabwean batsman Richard Ngarava to earn his side a two-run win. the Zimbabwean camp was not happy at all with the way West Indies earned their last wicket.
The act caused a lot of controversy in the cricketing world despite the fact that it is well within the laws of the game.
West Indies captain Shimron Hetmyer said he was comfortable with his decision to not withdraw the appeal.
"I would say yes, cricket is a game of uncertainties. We've seen it happen in cricket before. It's not a big deal for us," Hetmyer said.
"It's probably not in the spirit of the game, but we’re happy to have won."
