4 batters who scored consecutive hundreds in the IPL
IPL is the toughest T20 league in the world. The best talents of the cricketing world compete in this league. It is not everyone's cup of tea to succeed in this competition.
When the IPL was launched, many fans felt that they may not witness too many centuries in the league. However, the batters proved those fans wrong by scoring big on multiple occasions. The likes of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum even crossed the 150-run mark.
One of the most challenging tasks in T20 cricket is to score back-to-back hundreds. The Indian Premier League was launched in the year 2008, and since then, only the following four batters have accomplished the feat of recording a ton in two consecutive innings.
#1 Shubman Gill - IPL 2023
Shubman Gill is the latest name to feature on the list. The Gujarat Titans star accomplished the feat in the ongoing season. He recorded his maiden century against the Sunrisers Hyderabad last Monday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill scored 101 runs off 58 balls against SRH, helping GT win the game by 34 runs.
Last night in Bengaluru, Gill continued his top form and slammed an unbeaten 52-ball 104 to help GT chase a 198-run target with five balls to spare. The right-handed batter showed no mercy to the RCB bowlers as he whacked five fours and eight sixes.
It will be interesting to see if Gill can complete a hat-trick of centuries tomorrow against the Chennai Super Kings.
#2 Virat Kohli - IPL 2023
Just a couple of hours before Shubman Gill became a member of this list, Virat Kohli also recorded his second consecutive ton in the tournament. Interestingly, Kohli's first ton of the season came against the Sunrisers Hyderabad as well. He scored 100 runs off 63 balls, helping RCB chase a 187-run target.
Last night against GT, Kohli remained not out on 101 runs off 61 balls, taking his team to 197/5 in 20 overs. His efforts were in vain though as the Titans recorded a six-wicket win.
#3 Jos Buttler - IPL 2022
Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler had a forgettable season this year as he registered five ducks. However, he had a great season in 2022, where he recorded four centuries, with two of them coming in back-to-back matches.
Buttler smacked a 61-ball 103 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Brabourne Stadium on April 18. Four days later, Buttler scored a 65-ball 116 against the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium. He is the only foreign player to have achieved this feat.
#4 Shikhar Dhawan - IPL 2020
The first player to record back-to-back hundreds in the Indian Premier League was Shikhar Dhawan. He accomplished the feat while playing for the Delhi Capitals in the 2020 season.
Dhawan scored an unbeaten 58-ball 101* against the Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah, followed by an unbeaten 61-ball 106* against the Punjab Kings in Dubai. His knock against CSK helped DC win, but his hundred against PBKS came in a losing cause.
