IPL 2018: 4 Kings XI Punjab players who performed poorly against Chennai Superkings

<p>

Kings XI Punjab clashed against Chennai Super Kings at the MCA stadium in a do-or-die game. KXIP not only needed to win the match but needed to win with a bigger margin to get into the playoffs.

They were put into bat first by Chennai Super Kings and got off to a dreadful start losing their top three batsmen inside four overs and were reeling at 3-16 in four overs.

Manoj Tiwary (35) and David Miller (24) added 60 runs together for the fourth wicket. But Kings X1 Punjab kept losing wickets and soon they were reduced to 6-116 in 16.3 overs.

Karun Nair played a superb knock under pressure and helped in Kings X1 crossing the 150 run mark. Kings XI were bundled out for 153 in 19.4 overs. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with 4/10 in four overs.

In reply, Chennai Super Kings lost Ambati Rayudu in the second over. Faf du Plessis (14) struck three boundaries in short stay at the crease.

Sam Billing lasted only one ball as he was bowled off the bowling of Ankit Rajpoot. Suresh Raina held up one end, while Harbhajan Singh was promoted up the order to No. 5 struck couple of boundaries and a six before he was trapped LBW by Ashwin for 19.

The real surprise came for Deepak Chahar, who was promoted to No. 6 to accompany Raina.

Deepak Chahar played a game-changing knock of 39 in just 20 balls. His innings comprised of three sixes and a boundary.

This innings changed the course of the match and the game was in control of CSK. Raina spent quality time at the crease before he launched into Andrew Tye in the 19th over by scoring 22 runs of the penultimate over to bring the equation to one required off the last over.

Dhoni finished the game in his usual style by hooking a short delivery for a six to register a comprehensive victory for Chennai Super Kings.

This result meant Kings XI Punjab were knocked out of the tournament and Chennai Super Kings would take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in the first Qualifier on Tuesday night.

In a game that had everything, let us look at four players from Kings XI Punjab who couldn’t step up to the occasion in an important clash.

#4 Andrew Tye

Tye was not effective with the ball against CSK

Undoubtedly Andrew Tye has been the best bowler for Kings XI Punjab this season. The purple cap holder showed ample variations with the ball and managed to pick up wickets whenever his team required.

Coming into this game, he had picked up 24 wickets at an impeccable average of 16.71. Kings XI Punjab were required to restrict Chennai Super Kings under 100 runs to have any chance of qualifying for playoffs.

They banked heavily on Tye to deliver for them but the bowler had a terrible day with the ball.

The bowler couldn’t stick to a particular line and length and his knuckleballs were easily picked by the CSK batsmen.

23 runs were required of the last two overs and the onus was on Tye to bowl a tight over. Suresh Raina smashed the bowler for 22 runs which included two Sixes and two Fours to bring the equation to one run required of the last over.

His bowling figures read 4-0-47-0.

The Australian couldn’t do much with the bat as he lasted only two balls before holing out to the fielder at mid-off.
