4 times Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck in an international match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru ft. IND vs NZ 2024
Virat Kohli's poor form in international cricket continued as he was dismissed for a duck on Day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday, October 17. The 35-year-old had a disappointing series against Bangladesh as well. In the two-match Test series on home soil, he registered scores of 6, 7, 47, and 29*.
Before that, he struggled in the ODI series in Sri Lanka as well. In three matches, Kohli scored 24, 14 and 20 respectively. He was trapped leg before by spinners in all three games. And while the former India captain was Player of the Match in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa for his 76 off 59, he looked out of sorts with the willow in the preceding matches.
Coming back to Kohli's dismissal against New Zealand on Thursday, it marked the fourth instance of him getting out without scoring in an international match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Here's a recap of all four dismissals.
#1 India vs New Zealand, 4th ODI - December 2010
Kohli was dismissed for a second-ball duck against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in the fourth ODI of the five-match series in December 2010. India were set to chase a competitive 316 to win the match. Their chances suffered a huge setback as Kohli top-edged a pull off Andy McKay to long leg. His dismissal left India in a spot of bother at 68-2 at the end of the 10th over.
Despite the chase master's early dismissal, Team India managed to win the one-dayer against New Zealand by five wickets. Yusuf Pathan slammed an unbeaten 123 off 96 balls, a scintillating knock that featured seven fours and as many sixes. Parthiv Patel also chipped in with 53, while Rohit Sharma contributed a brisk 44.
#2 India vs Australia, 7th ODI - November 2013
Kohli was dismissed without scoring in the seventh and final one-dayer of the series against Australia in Bengaluru in November 2013. The right-handed batter fell for a three-ball duck in a rather unlucky fashion as he was run out following a mix-up with opener Rohit.
In the 20th over of India's innings, Kohli drove a fuller delivery from Clint McKay towards mid-on and set off for the run. Rohit responded initially but later pulled out, leaving his partner stranded. The fielder threw the ball to the keeper's end and took the bails off, with Kohli well short of his crease.
Rohit, though, made amends for the run-out by smashing his first double-hundred in one-day cricket. The right-handed batter hammered 209 off 158 balls, with the aid of 12 fours and 16 sixes. India posted a mammoth 383-6 on the board and then held Australia to 326, winning the contest by 57 runs.
#3 India vs Afghanistan, 3rd T20I - January 2024
At the start of 2024, Kohli was dismissed for a duck in the third T20I against Afghanistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Men in Blue batted first after winning the toss in his contest, but the former perished for a golden duck. The 35-year-old sliced a pull to mid-on off Fareed Ahmad's bowling. The ball seemed to get too big on the batter, who failed to control his stroke.
Rohit, however, smacked 121* off 69, while Rinku Singh contributed 69* off 39 as India put up 212-4. Afghanistan were brilliant in the chase and tied the game as their top three batters smashed fifties. The Men in Blue eventually won the contest in the second Super Over after the first was tied.
#4 India vs New Zealand, 1st Test - October 2024
The most recent instance of Kohli being dismissed for a duck in international cricket at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru was witnessed on Thursday, October 17. After the first day's play was washed out completely due to rain, India won the toss and decided to bat first in conditions tailor-made for Kiwi bowlers.
In Shubman Gill's absence, Kohli was sent into bat at No. 3. The right-handed batter fell for a nine-ball duck. William O’Rourke got one to jag back a long way from short of a length and took the former Indian captain by surprise. The batter could only glove the ball towards leg gully, where Glenn Phillips took a sharp catch while diving forward.
As many as five Indian batters were dismissed without scoring as the hosts plummeted to 46 all-out in 31.2 overs - their lowest Test total at home and third lowest overall. In response, New Zealand cruised to 78-1 in 19 overs.
