49 all out: RCB register record low in humiliating defeat to KKR

Royal Challengers Bangalore's star-studded batting line-up was sensationally skittled for the lowest total in Indian Premier League history on Sunday as Kolkata Knight Riders overcame a batting collapse of their own to secure a remarkable 82-run victory.

Chasing a seemingly modest target of 132, Bangalore subsided to 49 all out in 9.3 overs, with not a single player reaching double figures amid a frenzied atmosphere at Eden Gardens. The previous record low score had been Rajasthan Royals' 58 against RCB in 2009.

Virat Kohli's dismissal for a first-ball duck set the tone for the visitors' embarrassing innings, which saw seamers Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Woakes and Colin de Grandhomme run riot on their way to respective figures of 3-21, 3-6 and 3-4.

KKR had earlier made a superb start through Sunil Narine (34 from 17 balls), before enduring a struggle against spin as they were limited to 131 all out.

That total ultimately proved more than enough, however, with Bangalore offering a shambolic response on their way to a fifth defeat from seven outings this season. They now sit bottom of the table. In contrast, second-placed Kolkata boast five wins from their first seven outings.

Coulter-Nile did much of the initial damage for Kolkata. Either side of Umesh Yadav accounting for Mandeep Singh, the Australian had Kohli caught at second slip and AB de Villiers held behind the wicket off a top-edged pull, before also removing Kedar Jadhav, the top-scorer with a paltry nine.

England all-rounder Woakes then took centre stage, removing Chris Gayle - on the four-year anniversary of the opener's world-record T20 innings of 175 not out for RCB - and Stuart Binny in his first over.

The accurate Woakes also had Samuel Badree lbw and there were three late scalps for De Grandhomme as Bangalore's last six batsmen fell for the addition of just nine runs.

Kolkata's innings began with a bang thanks to Narine, who scored all of his 42 runs against Gujarat Lions last time out in boundaries.

On this occasion, Narine hit Badree for three fours and a six in the first over and dominated an opening stand of 48 with Gautam Gambhir that spanned just 22 balls.

The Knight Riders were unable to make the most of their strong start as wickets tumbled at regular intervals thereafter, Yuzvendra Chahal picking up 3-16.

Yet it mattered little as RCB produced a horror show in reply that is sure to prompt serious questions.
