5 batsmen with most 90s in ODIs
Scoring a century is a special feat in ODI cricket. It does not come calling very often. It is through endurance and hard work coupled with skills and determination that a player gets to the coveted three-figure mark.
In this list, let us look at the batsmen who have come agonizingly close to a hundred and fallen short. Here is the list of 5 batsmen with the most number of nineties in ODI cricket
5. Jacques Kallis
He is easily one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of ODI cricket. In the 328 matches that the great South African played, he scored 11,579 at an average of 44.36 including 17 hundreds and 86 fifties. Unfortunately, he was dismissed in the nervous 90s eight times in ODI cricket
RECORD: Matches: 328 Innings: 314 Runs: 11579 90’s: 8
4. Aravinda de Silva
One of the finest batsmen produced by Sri Lanka, the great Aravinda De Silva was one of the main pillars of the star-studded Sri Lankan batting line-up of the 1990s and the early 2000s. In the 308 matches that he played for the Lankans, De Silva scored 9284 runs at an average of 34.90 including 11 hundreds and 64 fifties. He was dismissed in the nineties 9 times in ODI cricket.
RECORD: Matches: 308 Innings: 296 Runs: 9284 90’s: 9
3. Grant Flower
One of the greatest batsmen produced by Zimbabwe, Grant Flower was a batting mainstay of the Zimbabwe sides of the 1990s and the early 2000s. In the 221 matches that he played for Zimbabwe, Flower scored 6571 runs including 6 hundreds and 40 fifties. His century count would have gone up by two and a half times had he not been dismissed in the nervous 90s on 9 occasions.
RECORD: Matches: 221 Innings: 214 Runs: 6571 90’s: 9
2. Nathan Astle
Second on the list is the right-handed opening batsmen from New Zealand, Nathan Astle. In the 217 matches that he played for the Kiwis, Astle scored 7090 runs at an average of 34.93 including 41 fifties and 16 hundreds. He was dismissed in the 90s 9 times in ODI cricket.
RECORD: Matches: 223 Innings: 217 Runs: 7090 90’s: 9
1. Sachin Tendulkar
Coming at No 1 on the list is none other than the greatest batsmen ever in the history of ODI cricket, the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar is the owner of almost every conceivable batting record including that for the most runs and hundreds.
Still, he also holds this rather unwanted record of being dismissed in the nervous 90s on a staggering 18 occasions. Had he converted those 90s into hundreds, the little master could have taken his career tally to a virtually unbeatable 67 hundreds.
RECORD: Matches: 463 Innings: 452 Runs: 18426 90’s: 18
