5 big records broken by Team India in 2024 T20 World Cup
India scripted a historic win against South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. In what was a nerve-wracking contest, Rohit Sharma and Co. held their nerves to clinch a seven-run victory.
With this, the Men in Blue ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought and also joined West Indies and England to win the title in the shortest format twice. They first won the trophy during the inaugural edition that was held in South Africa back in 2007.
The Indian team played some wonderful cricket throughout the tournament and eventually proved themselves worthy winners. It was a memorable campaign with big names such as captain Rohit, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from T20 Internationals on a high note as well.
This campaign stood out for multiple records being broken by the Indian team, such as Rohit scoring the fastest fifty of the 2024 T20 World Cup, and Arshdeep Singh picking up 17 wickets, the most by an Indian pacer in a T20 World Cup.
As we relive this emphatic triumph, let us go back to the five big records broken by the Indian team during their title-winning run:
#5 Highest team total in the final of a Men's T20 World Cup
India's total of 176-7 in the final against South Africa at Barbados is the highest by any team in the final of a Men's T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli played a brilliant 76-run knock while Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27) chipped in to propel India to the total.
The record was previously held by Australia, who put up a total of 173-2 against New Zealand in the final of the 2021 edition. They created the record as they successfully chased down a target of 172 to win the final and be crowned champions as well.
However, the record is now held by the Indian team after their historic performance in the final of the 2024 edition.
#4 India only team to win a T20 World Cup unbeaten
India won three out of their group-stage games, registering victories against Pakistan, USA, and Ireland while their final group-stage game against Canada was washed out due to rain.
In the Super 8s, they beat Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia to qualify for the semi-final. They then knocked out defending champions England to enter the final, where they beat South Africa to lift the trophy.
Therefore, India won eight out of their nine matches at the 2024 T20 World Cup with one game being washed out. South Africa were also unbeaten coming into the final.
However, India's victory meant that they became the first team team to win a T20 World Cup remaining unbeaten.
#3 Second-largest win margin in T20 World Cup knockouts
India recorded the second-largest win by the margin of runs in T20 World Cup knockouts. They achieved this feat as a result of their 68-run win against England in the second semi-final of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Guyana.
The Men in Blue are only behind West Indies, who beat Australia by 74 runs in the second semi-final of the ICC World T20 2012. West Indies also went on to beat Sri Lanka in the final and won the trophy that year.
The Indian team posted a total of 171-7 on the board against England and later bowled them out for just 103, progressing to the final.
#2 Oldest captain to win T20 World Cup
Indian captain Rohit Sharma became the oldest to win a T20 World Cup, aged 37 years and 60 days old as he led India to victory in the final against South Africa in Barbados.
He ended his T20I career on a memorable note by ending an 11-year ICC title drought for the country. Moreover, he also became the second oldest captain to win an ICC trophy.
Pakistan's Imran Khan was 39 years and 172 days old when he led his country to a famous win in the final of the 1992 ODI World Cup against England.
#1 First bowler to be awarded 'Player of the Series' in Men's T20 World Cup
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah had an exemplary campaign at the 2024 T20 World Cup, stepping up for the side whenever they needed him to.
He put up a consistent and sensational performance, picking up 15 wickets at an average of 8.26. His economy rate (4.17) at this World Cup was also the best for any bowler who has bowled 100-plus deliveries in a single edition of the men's T20 World Cup.
In the 29.4 overs that he bowled, he was only hit for 12 boundaries in all. He also picked up a couple of wickets in the final and bowled a match-winning spell to help India steal victory from the jaws of defeat.
Bumrah was awarded the 'Player of the Series' for his scintillating and unbelievable display, making him the first-ever bowler to win the award in the Men's T20 World Cup history.
