5 biggest price drops in IPL 2025 Auction ft. Sam Curran, Glenn Maxwell

IPL 2025 Auction is done and dusted. Saudi Arabia hosted the mega event for the first time, and it proved to be a memorable day for several players. The 10 IPL teams spent crores of rupees to acquire the cricketers they wished to have in their squads.

It was a big payday for several top names in the cricket world, but at the same time, there were a few players whose salaries decreased. Due to the auction dynamics, even some extraordinarily talented names were sold for bargain amounts.

Here's a list of the top five players whose salaries reduced the most from IPL 2024 to 2025.

(Please note: Unsold players from IPL 2025 Auction are not considered for this list).

5 biggest price drops in IPL 2025 Auction

#5 Glenn Maxwell - ₹11 crore to ₹4.2 crore

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has always been one of the most sought-after players at the IPL auctions. Surprisingly, there wasn't much demand for him this year, majorly because he had a forgettable season with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024.

Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings showed interest in Maxwell's services. Eventually, the Australian star returned to his former team PBKS at ₹4.2 crore, with his salary reducing by a whopping ₹6.8 crore.

#4 Spencer Johnson - ₹10 crore to ₹2.8 crore

Kolkata Knight Riders needed an overseas pacer after they could not re-sign Mitchell Starc at the IPL 2025 Auction. The defending champions went for Starc's compatriot Spencer Johnson, who earned ₹10 crore in his debut season earlier this year with the Gujarat Titans.

There wasn't much interest for Johnson this time around though. KKR managed to sign him for just ₹2.8 crore, bringing his salary down by ₹7.2 crore.

#3 Sameer Rizvi - ₹8.4 crore to ₹95 lakh

Uncapped India all-rounder Sameer Rizvi grabbed the headlines at the IPL 2024 Auction when the Chennai Super Kings went all out for him and secured his services for ₹8.4 crore. Rizvi could not justify the price tag and eventually got released.

CSK tried to get him back but did not bid aggressively for him. Delhi Capitals signed him for ₹95 lakh, meaning his salary was reduced by ₹7.45 crore.

#2 Mitchell Starc - ₹24.75 crore to ₹11.75 crore

Only two players had a salary drop of more than ₹10 crore and one of them was Mitchell Starc. He was the most expensive player at the mini-auction last year, where the Kolkata Knight Riders broke the bank and splurged ₹24.75 crore for his services.

This season, Starc will represent the Delhi Capitals, with his salary being ₹11.75 crore. Starc's salary has come down by a massive ₹13 crore.

#1 Sam Curran - ₹18.5 crore to ₹2.4 crore

English all-rounder Sam Curran earned the dubious record for the biggest salary drop at the IPL 2025 Auction. Curran had a massive deal worth ₹18.5 crore with the Punjab Kings team last season.

Chennai Super Kings managed to secure his services for ₹2.4 crore at the IPL 2025 Auction. It means Curran's salary has been reduced by an enormous ₹16.1 crore.
