5 prominent Indian cricketers who debuted after James Anderson but have retired already ft. MS Dhoni

Legendary England pacer James Anderson is set to play his last international game against the West Indies. James Anderson's final match will be the opening game of a two-match Test series set to begin on Wednesday, July 10 at Lord’s.

On December 15, 2002, he made his debut for England in an ODI match against Australia. At the 2015 ODI World Cup, he played his final ODI match against Afghanistan. The right pacer took 269 wickets in 194 matches. Additionally, he took 18 wickets while playing 19 T20I matches for England.

The England bowler made his Test debut against Zimbabwe in May 2003. Anderson's final game will be his 188th test match. He is the third-highest wicket-taker in test cricket history, with 700 wickets. Muttiah Muralithran tops the list with 800 wickets, followed by Shane Warne (708). Anderson needs nine more wickets in his final match to move up to second place.

The wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik made his international debut for India in an ODI match against England at Lord’s on September 5, 2004. He soon received his first Test cap in November 2004, in a game against Australia.

Karthik represented the Men in Blue in 26 Tests, 94 ODIs and 56 T20Is. He was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning team. Karthik's last appearance for India came in 2022 in a T20 World Cup against Bangladesh.

The right-handed batter announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on June 1, 2024. He works as a commentator and will serve as a mentor and batting coach for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2025.


#3 Suresh Raina

The 37-year-old made his international debut in an ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2005. In the following year, Raina also made his T20 debut; however, he had to wait four more years before getting his first test cap in 2010.

The left-handed batter was integral to the Indian set-up for many years. He represented Men in Blue in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. Raina was part of the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy-winning team.

He announced his retirement on August 15, 2020. Raina now works as a broadcaster and is seen playing in different leagues around the world.


#2 Gautam Gambhir

The newly elected head coach of the Indian men's cricket team made his international debut in 2003 in an ODI match against Bangladesh. The left-handed batter represented India in 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 T20Is. He has more than 10,000 runs to his name along with 20 centuries.

Gambhir last donned the Indian jersey in 2016 in a test match against England. He announced his retirement from international cricket on December 4, 2018. He then joined politics and became a Lok Sabha member from 2019 to 2024.

He was also the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, helping them win their third title. Gambhir has now replaced Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the India men's team and will be looking to take Indian cricket to another level.

One of the most successful Indian captains, MS Dhoni, made his debut in 2004 in an ODI game against Bangladesh. MS Dhoni led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. India also became the No. 1 Test side in 2009 under his leadership.

Dhoni played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs, and 98 T20Is; he scored more than 15,000 runs, with 16 centuries to his name. MS last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. He announced his retirement on August 15, 2020. He was last seen in action during the IPL 2024.
