5 reasons why Virat Kohli should be made the next captain
Not many could have had a dream entry into the international arena like this youngster. He certainly possessed the Midas’ touch, winning the U-19 World Cup for the nation and then cementing his place in the national side in a very short span and was even promoted as the vice-captain of the side. Being touted as the next captain, there are many critics who have a negative opinion about the attitude of this Delhi lad. But it has been Virat Kohli’s attitude and firepower that has prompted the Men in Blue to win quite a few matches in the last two years.
India has been through a rough patch ever since they won the 2011 World Cup, but without Kohli, they might have played like an associate nation, at least in the limited overs format. He has been the blue-eyed boy of the Indian team, and there have been doubts about his maturity and attitude. He has been let down by his foul-language, but still, he is the only player capable of replacing MS Dhoni as the captain of the side.
In the past few weeks, Kohli’s patience has been tested, but still, if form is temporary and class is permanent, Kohli should go ablaze with his bats in a short time. Let us have a quick look at the five reasons why Virat Kohli should be made the captain of the team.
1. Leaving Dhoni, Kohli must be the most experienced and able captain in the Indian team. The likes of Gambhir and Sehwag remain unsure of their places in the side, and there is no point in handing over responsibilities to them in any format. Virat has led the U-19 side to glory, and he also has the experience of captaining RCB and also playing alongside Vettori, Dilshan, Gayle, Dravid, De Villiers and Taylor, which might boost his confidence as a captain.
2. The Indian team does not lack in talent, but the trouble has been the lack of inspiration for them to play intelligent cricket. However, Kohli could bring the Dada-like aggression into the team to revamp the spirit in the players. Cricket is a gentleman‘s game, but to dominate the world, you need someone with Kohli’s attitude to bring some fear in the opponents’ camp.
3. Unlike many other players in the side, Kohli does not seem to possess a huge ego, or have disputes with any other players in the side. He could always been seen as a cheerful boy in the field, motivating others, which makes him a strong candidate for captaincy. He will be able to communicate freely with all the players in the squad, which might solve many headaches that are present in the team today.
4. While a lot of fun has been made about Kohli’s attitude, it has been the same attitude that has brought out the best in the youngster. When Australian fans made fun of him in the 2012 Test series, he abused them and then came back stronger in the next match to hit his maiden test century. He has the ability to keep his calm and continue scoring even under pressure, like the Hobart ODI last year. It is still too early, but he can become someone like Ponting, if he keeps his aggression under control.
5. More than all, Team India badly needs a change. Dhoni is an exceptional player and maybe, a good captain, but still, the players do not seem to find it easy under him. A fresh face is needed to turn around fortunes, especially with matches against Australia and South Africa coming up. Yuvraj and Raina do not convince often enough to be good captains and Pujara hasn’t played on foreign soil yet. Kohli really seems to be the best option to regain the lost glory.
