5 records broken in IND-W vs WI-W 3rd T20I
India Women shattered a plethora of records in the third T20I against the West Indies Women at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, December 19.
Batting first, they posted a mammoth total of 217/4 in 20 overs. Skipper Smriti Mandhana carried her splendid form with the bat, smashing a 47-ball 77 with 13 fours and a six. Richa Ghosh also played a whirlwind innings, providing India Women with the finishing touches as she powered her way to a quick-fire 21-ball 54.
Jemimah Rodrigues (39) and Raghvi Bist (31*) also made vital contributions that led to the massive total. Courtesy of this huge total, the Women in Blue also achieved multiple records/milestones.
#5 Most 50 plus scores in Women's T20Is
India Women's team captain for this series, Smriti Mandhana achieved several records herself with her blistering knock. As she scored a 47-ball 77, she notched up her 30th fifty-plus score in Women's T20Is.
As a result, she went past New Zealand great Suzie Bates, who has 29 fifty-plus scores in WT20Is, to become the batter with the most 50-plus scores in Women's T20Is.
#4 Most runs in a calendar year in Women's T20Is
Smriti also now holds the record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year in Women's T20Is. The left-handed opener now has 763 runs from 23 matches this year at an average of 42.38 and a high score of 77. She went past Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu, who has 720 runs from 21 matches this year.
Additionally, Smriti also set the record for the most fifty-plus scores in a calendar year in Women's T20Is with eight half-centuries this year. The 77-run knock in the third T20I against West Indies is her eighth fifty-plus score in WT20Is this year.
#3 Most runs by an Indian Women's player in a bilateral T20I series
India Women's T20I captain Smriti Mandhana also became the Indian batter with the most runs in a bilateral T20I series. She has scored 193 runs in this series from three matches at an average of 64.33 with three consecutive half-centuries. She went past Mithali Raj who held the record previously with 192 runs against South Africa in 2018.
That said, she also became only the second Indian Women's player to score three consecutive fifties in WT20Is after Mithali Raj.
#2 Joint-fastest fifty in WT20Is
Wicket-keeper batter Richa Ghosh smashed a scintillating 21-ball 54. She brought up her half-century in quick time, taking just 18 deliveries to get to the landmark. In the process, she registered the joint-fastest fifty in Women's T20Is.
Sophie Devine and Phoebe Litchfield are the other two batters who have also scored half-centuries in WT20Is off just 18 deliveries. However, Richa became the Indian batter with the fastest fifty in WT20Is, breaking Mandhana's record, who previously held it with her 24-ball fifty in 2019.
#1 Highest total in T20Is for India Women
India Women, as already mentioned, posted a record total of 217/4 from their 20 overs. This is the highest total for the Women in Blue in T20Is, going past their score of 201/5 against UAE in the Asia Cup earlier this year.
Moreover, this is also the highest total by any team against the West Indies in WT20Is. Previously, Australia held the record with a total of 212/6 that they had scored against the West Indies in 2023. Additionally, 217/4 is also the highest total in WT20Is in India, surpassing Australia's 209/4 in 2018.
