5 records Rohit Sharma broke during his explosive 41-ball 92 against Australia in 2024 T20 World Cup
The 51st match of 2024 T20 World Cup is currently underway, where Rohit Sharma-led India are up against Mitchell Marsh's Australia. It is a crucial game in the race to the semifinals, and captain Rohit led from the front with a 41-ball 92 at the top of the order.
Opening the innings for India, Rohit showed enormous intent and attacked the Australian fast bowlers. He took Mitchell Starc to the cleaners, scoring 28 runs off an over bowled by him. The Indian skipper also whacked a 100m six against Pat Cummins.
Eventually, Sharma lost his stumps to Starc just eight runs short of his century. While the Indian skipper could not complete his maiden T20 World Cup ton, here's a list of five records broken by him during his blitzkrieg.
#1 Rohit Sharma smashed the fastest 50 by an Indian captain in T20 World Cup history
Rohit Sharma broke his own record for the fastest half-century by an Indian captain in a T20 World Cup match. The Indian captain blasted a 36-ball 50 against Ireland earlier this month in New York.
He raced to his half-century off just 19 balls against Australia in St Lucia earlier today. Only KL Rahul (18 balls vs Scotland) and Yuvraj Singh (12 balls vs England) have scored faster half-centuries than Rohit in T20 World Cups for India.
#2 Rohit Sharma smacked the fastest half-century against Australia in T20 World Cups
Sharma took only 19 deliveries to complete his half-century against Australia earlier today. With this, he has set a record for the fastest half-century by any batter against the Aussies in T20 World Cup history.
Previously, this record belonged to Yuvraj Singh. The former Indian all-rounder took 20 balls for his 50 against Australia in the 2007 T20 World Cup semifinals.
#3 Rohit Sharma broke another record held by Yuvraj Singh
Rohit was a youngster when Yuvraj Singh set many records in T20 World Cup 2007. 17 years later, Rohit is shattering Yuvraj's records.
The Indian captain was for the most sixes by an Indian in a T20 World Cup inning. Yuvraj smacked seven sixes against England in a Super 8 match of the 2007 T20 World Cup, while Rohit whacked eight maximums today.
#4 Rohit Sharma broke Virat Kohli's record
Rohit now has the highest individual score by a right-handed batter for India in T20 World Cups. The Indian captain scored 92 runs earlier today, breaking Virat Kohli's record.
Virat scored an unbeaten 89 in the T20 World Cup 2016 semifinal against West Indies, but Rohit has overtaken him. The overall record belongs to Suresh Raina, who scored 101 against South Africa in 2010.
#5 Rohit Sharma overtook Virat Kohli on another list as well
Rohit's 92 is now the highest individual score by an Indian captain in T20 World Cup history. He had a chance to become the first Indian skipper to smash a T20 World Cup century, but Mitchell Starc dismissed him.
In 2021, Virat Kohli scored 57 against Pakistan, which was the highest individual score by an Indian captain in T20 World Cups. However, the record belongs to Rohit now.
