5 times Rohit Sharma suffered an injury scare in the nets ft. BGT 2024-25

Rohit Sharma, India's captain in ODIs and Tests, has been a standout performer for over a decade, playing a pivotal role in numerous match-winning moments for the team. Consistently performing at the highest level demands intense and regular net sessions, where the pressure to stay in top form can sometimes lead to injury scares.

Rohit has faced several such incidents—ranging from minor tweaks to more serious concerns—that have left fans and team management on edge throughout his career.

While his batting skills are unquestionable, the physical demands of modern cricket and the buildup to important series often raise concerns about his fitness. Despite these challenges, Rohit has shown remarkable resilience, frequently bouncing back from these scares.

On that note, let's revisit five notable instances when Rohit Sharma endured injury scares in the nets—times that left everyone worried.

#1 Ahead of the T20I series against Bangladesh in 2019

Ahead of the three-match T20I series between India and Bangladesh in November 2019, Rohit Sharma suffered an injury scare just two days before the first match in Delhi.

During a throwdown session with specialist Nuwan Seneviratne, Rohit got struck on his left thigh, forcing him to leave the nets.

As reported by India Today, Rohit appeared frustrated with the pace at which the throwdowns were being delivered. Despite the scare, Rohit made a swift recovery and played in all three games, leading India to a 2-1 series victory after losing the opening match in Delhi.

#2 Ahead of 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England

As India prepared for their semi-final clash against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Adelaide, Rohit Sharma endured an injury scare just two days before the match. During a practice session, he was struck on his right forearm while facing throwdowns from the team’s sidearm thrower, Raghu.

The ball bowled at over 150 km/h from just 18 yards and climbed on him as he attempted a short-arm pull, causing sharp pain. Rohit immediately left the nets, and an ice pack was quickly applied to his right arm to reduce the swelling.

The Mumbai cricketer went on to play the match but had a disappointing performance, managing just 27 runs off 28 balls. India faced a heavy defeat, losing by 10 wickets.

#3 Ahead of the 2023 WTC final against Australia

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma also experienced an injury scare ahead of the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. During a practice session, he was struck on his left thumb while batting, resulting in a bandage being applied to the injury.

Initially, he carried on with his practice but eventually decided to stop. Despite the scare, Rohit was fit for the match and scored 58 runs across two innings. Unfortunately, India suffered a heavy defeat, losing by 209 runs.

#4 During the 2024 T20 World Cup

India began their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with a match against Ireland, where Rohit Sharma played a key role, scoring an unbeaten 52 off 37 balls. However, during his innings, he took a painful blow to his hand near the biceps and decided to retire after reaching his fifty.

India's next match was against Pakistan, and during a pre-match net session, there was a moment of concern when Rohit’s right thumb was struck by a delivery from the throwdown specialist. Despite the injury, the seasoned opener quickly shrugged it off and continued batting.

Rohit then led India to a six-run victory over Pakistan and went on to guide the team to the championship, clinching the title with a win over South Africa in the final.

#5 During the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The latest injury scare occurred today, December 22, when Rohit Sharma was struck on his left knee during a practice session ahead of the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Although visibly uncomfortable, the opening batter continued his practice for a while before walking off the field. After the session, the team physio attended to him, and the 37-year-old was seen with an ice pack on the injured area.

Indian pacer Akash Deep, in his conversation with the media, provided the following update on Rohit’s injury:

"Such injuries are quite common when you play cricket and it doesn't make much of a difference. I think this was a wicket for white-ball cricket, so the ball kept a bit low and it was a bit difficult to bat on. But such blows happen and it's not a concern.”

India will take on Australia in the fourth Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning Thursday, December 26, in Melbourne.
