5 uncapped players who scored the most runs in an IPL season

It has been a fabulous IPL 2023 campaign for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the cash-rich league. The Rajasthan Royals became the first Indian uncapped player to amass 600 runs in a season and has also broken the record for most runs scored by an uncapped player in the Indian Premier League.

The batter from Mumbai has scored 625 runs this season, averaging 48.08 with a strike rate of 163.61 in 14 matches. He has also scored five half-centuries and a century in the tournament, well and truly enjoying his breakthrough season in the grandest T20 tournament in the world.

Shaun Marsh was the last uncapped batter to score 600 or more runs in the IPL, way back in the inaugural season in 2008. Jaiswal has also become the second youngest Indian player to score over 600 runs in a season after Rishabh Pant did so in 2018.

Well, as you can tell, Yashasvi Jaiswal has broken plenty of records this season. On that note, let's take a look at five other uncapped batters who scored the most runs in the IPL:

#1 Yashasvi Jaiswal - IPL 2023

With 625 runs in the season, Jaiswal has been the breakout star from this season and has already laid down the marker for his place in the Indian side. The opening batter has been sensational this season and has been churning out runs for fun, making batting look easy while doing so alongside Jos Buttler.

The opener has already scored a century this season and could have had another as well. He notched up his fifth half-century of the season in the must-win match against the Punjab Kings on Friday, keeping the Rajasthan Royals' campaign alive.

Regardless of what he goes on to achieve for the rest of his career, this is an achievement no one can take away from the Mumbai batter. Hopefully, he can only go on to achieve bigger and better things from here on.

#2 Shaun Marsh - IPL 2008

Shaun Marsh was well and truly one of the first overseas sensations in the Indian Premier League. The Australian opener set plenty of records in the inaugural edition of the tournament, scoring 616 runs at an average of 68.44 and a strike rate of 139.68.

He scored five half-centuries and a ton in only 11 games that season. The fact that his record has only just been broken this season tells you the magnitude of not only his performances but also Jaiswal's performances this season.

#3 Ishan Kishan - IPL 2020

Known as India's little pocket dynamo, Ishan Kishan enjoyed a splendid breakthrough season in the cash-rich league in 2020. The southpaw wicketkeeper-batter was at his destructive best that season, scoring 516 runs at an average of 57.33 and a strike rate of 145.76.

His performances were outstanding throughout the season and earned him an India call-up not soon after. In fact, the Mumbai Indians went all out for him at the IPL mega auction, retaining his services for ₹15.25 crore.

The Bihar-born wicketkeeper is yet to scale the same heights from that season and will be hoping to justify that pricetag sooner rather than later.

#4 Suryakumar Yadav - IPL 2018

Currently the best T20 batter in the world, Suryakumar Yadav also made his mark in the best T20 league in the world. When traded to the Mumbai Indians, he adapted to a role higher up the order and made full use of the pristine surfaces at the Wankhede stadium to pile on the runs.

In 2018, he scored 512 runs at an average of 36.57 and a strike rate of 133.33. The breakthrough season wasn't enough to earn him an India call-up that year but SKY kept his head down to continue putting in the performances for his side.

A player so good, he's on the list twice. Suryakumar Yadav well and truly bossed it on the biggest stage of them all before earning his call-up for the Indian side. In 2020, he scored 480 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 145.01.

Much like in 2018, he scored 4 half-centuries in 2020 as well. SKY is the only player to feature on this list twice and that's a testament to the potential he was showing before going on to achieve the things he has in his career so far.
