7 players who have scored a hundred and claimed a 5-fer in a Test more than once ft. Ravichandran Ashwin

Team India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin walked away with the Player of the Match award for his stupendous all-round effort in the first Test against Bangladesh. Courtesy of his exploits at his home ground - the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk in Chennai - the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

Batting first after losing the toss, India put up 376 on the board in 91.2 overs. They lost six wickets for 144 runs, but Ashwin (113) brought up his sixth Test ton, adding 199 for the seventh wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (86). The off-spinner went wicketless in the first innings but starred with 6-88 in the second as India registered victory by 280 runs.

The game in Chennai marked the fourth instance of Ashwin scoring a hundred and claiming five wickets in the same Test. On that note, let's look at players who have scored a ton and picked up a five-fer in a Test more than once.


Ian Botham (5 times)

England legend Ian Botham scored a hundred and picked up a five-fer in a Test on a record five occasions. The all-rounder scored 103 in the first innings against New Zealand in Christchurch in March 1978. He followed it up with figures of 5-73 as England won the Test by 174 runs.

The former England all-rounder scored 108 and picked up 8-34 in a Test against Pakistan at Lord's in June 1978. The hosts clinched this Test by an innings and 120 runs. Botham had an exceptional Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in February 1980. He scored 114 and registered figures of 6-58 and 7-48 as England won the contest by 10 wickets.

The 68-year-old famously scored 149* and picked up 6-95 in the Ashes Test in Leeds in July 1981. Famously referred to as Botham's Test, he rescued the team from the fringes of defeat and lifted them to a famous 18-run victory. Botham scored 138 and picked up 5-59 against New Zealand in Wellington in January 1984. This Test, however, ended in a draw.


Ravichandran Ashwin (4 times)

Before the Chennai Test that ended on Sunday, Ashwin had scored a hundred and picked up a five-fer at the same venue against England in February 2021. The offie picked up 5-43 in England's first innings and scored 106 in India's second essay as the hosts won the game by 317 runs.

The 38-year-old scored 113 and picked up 7-83 against West Indies in North Sound in July 2016. He was Player of the Match as India won the Test by an innings and 92 runs. The first instance of Ashwin scoring a ton and claiming a five-fer in a Test was also registered against West Indies. He picked up 5-156 and scored 103 in a draw at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai in November 2011.


Garry Sobers (2 times)

West Indies great Sir Garry Sobers scored a hundred and picked up a five-fer in a Test twice. He notched up 104 and claimed 5-63 against India in Kingston in April 1962. The Windies won the Test by 123 runs.

The former Caribbean all-rounder also hammered 174 and picked up 5-41 in a Test against England in Leeds in August 1966. Sobers' heroics lifted West Indies to a thumping victory by an innings and 55 runs.


Mushtaq Mohammad (2 times)

Former Pakistan all-rounder Mushtaq Mohammad also has the distinction of claiming a five-fer and scoring a hundred in the same Test twice. The first instance was registered against New Zealand in Dunedin in February 1973. Mohammad scored 201 and picked up 5-49 as Pakistan won by an innings and 166 runs.

Mohammad also starred with 121 and 5-28 against West Indies in Port of Spain in April 1977. Thanks to the then-Pakistan skipper's all-round brilliance, the visitors won the contest by 266 runs.


Jacques Kallis (2 times)

Legendary former South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis scored 110 and picked up 5-90 against West Indies in Cape Town in January 1999. He also contributed an unbeaten 88 in the match that the Proteas won by 149 runs.

Kallis then scored 139* and picked up 5-21 against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom in October 2002. The all-rounder was the easy choice for Player of the Match as South Africa registered a thumping victory by an innings and 160 runs.


Shakib Al Hasan (2 times)

Seasoned Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan starred with 144 and 6-82 in a Test against Pakistan in Mirpur in December 2011. His exploits, however, went in vain as Pakistan won the contest by seven wickets.

Shakib scored 137 and picked up 10 wickets (5-80 & 5-44) in a Test match against Zimbabwe in Khulna in November 2014. His dominant performance with bat and ball resulted in a 162-run victory for Bangladesh.


Ravindra Jadeja (2 times)

While Ashwin has picked up a five-fer and scored a hundred in the same Test four times, fellow India all-rounder Jadeja has achieved the feat twice. The versatile cricketer scored 175* and picked up 5-41 against Sri Lanka in Mohali in March 2022. Jadeja finished with nine wickets in the match as India registered victory by an innings and 222 runs.

The 35-year-old also scored 112 and picked up 5-41 against England in Rajkot in February 2024. The seasoned all-rounder won the Player of the Match as India clinched the Test by 434 runs.
