AB de Villiers vs West Indies: Fastest 150 in ODIs and other records

AB de Villiers acknowledges the crowd after reaching his century against the West Indies

AB de Villiers has produced another performance worthy of his present standards. He reached 50 off 30 balls, 100 off 52 balls, 150 off 64 balls and 162* off 66 balls in the innings which included 17 fours and eight strokes over the boundary line. He smashed the second fastest century in the history of World Cups and the second fastest century of his own in ODIs.

De Villiers had scored a century in 31 balls against the same opponents on January 18, 2015 at Johannesburg.

His century today in 52 balls is the joint tenth quickest century in ODIs but his 150 in 64 balls is the fastest 150 ever in ODIs. He overtook Shane Watson, who had scored 150 in 83 balls in his innings of 185 not out against Bangladesh in 2010.

  • AB de Villiers had compiled an innings of 149 off 44 balls when he had scored his 31-ball century against West Indies at Johannesburg, falling just short of this record which he now holds.
  • Ricky Ponting scored his 150 in 99 balls and then Herschelle Gibbs completed his 150 in 100 balls in the fateful match at Johannesburg in 2006.

Most runs against one team in World Cups

AB de Villiers, in the course of his innings, became the first batsman to aggregate over 400 runs against a single team in World Cups. At the end of the match, he had a total of 415 runs against West Indies at an average of 415.00.

He has played three matches against them – one each in 2007, 2011 and 2015; his scores are 146 in 2007, 107* in 2011 and 162* in 2015. He is also the first batsman to score three centuries against a single team in World Cups.

Ab de Villiers, when he reached 102, went past Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 355 runs against Kenya which was the highest by anyone against a single team in World Cups.

Quickest to score 3000 runs as captain in ODIs

AB de Villiers completed 3000 runs as captain – when he reached his 9th run in his 60th innings as captain.

He started captaining in 2012 and has scored 3153 runs in 60 innings with nine centuries and 17 fifties at an average of 68.54 and strike rate of 110.12. He went past MS Dhoni who took 70 innings to score 3000 runs as captain in ODIs.
