Adelaide Oval is a stadium in Adelaide, South Australia, located in between City Centre and North Adelaide. Adelaide Oval Stadium has the capacity to hold 53,500 people.
It is home to South Australia Cricket team, Adelaide Strikers Cricket team. The stadium hosts games such as Rugby, Australian Rules Football, archery, baseball, hockey, lawn tennis.
History
The Adelaide Oval was established in 1871 after South Australian Cricket Association was formed. In 1877, the first football match was played between Adelaide Football Association and Bankers.
The first Test match played at Adelaide Oval was between Australia and England in 1884. England won the match by 8 wickets. Adelaide is the 6th international venue to host a Test match.
The inaugural South Australian Tennis Championship was staged in 1889 at the Oval.
In the year 1910, Australasian Tennis Championship was staged for the first time at the Oval, won by Heath Rodney.
Major Matches
In 1884, Australia played England in first ever Test match at the venue. Australia played the first ODI in Adelaide Oval against West Indies in 1975.
Adelaide has also hosted matches for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, which included a quarter-final between Australia and Pakistan.
On November 27, 2015 Adelaide hosted its first ever Day/Night Test match which featured Australia and New Zealand.
The first ever Day/Night Ashes match was held here in 2017 December.
Controversies
In the Ashes match that was held on December 2nd, 2017 Australian Batsman Shaun Marsh and Tim Paine were given out lbw but the decision was overturned by DRS method which made many to question the Umpires about their credibility.
Recent Matches
Recently in Big Bash League, Adelaide Strikers played Brisbane Heat in which Brisbane won by 10 runs. In the last Ashes match played here Australia beat England by 120 runs.
