Allan Lamb feels Indian cricket is in safe hands under Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble has had a good start to his tenure as India coach

A cricketer's first big achievement is always memorable, for both him and the world. Ask a Sachin Tendulkar about his first Test hundred and you will immediately have anecdotes start flowing about how the Little Master felt while trying to save a game for India in Manchester, even when it seemed all over.

For a bowler, the first Test wicket is always memorable, and Allan Lamb will go down in history as the first of the 619 that Anil Kumble picked up during his 18-year-long international career. Lamb was caught by Sanjay Manjrekar for 38 off the bowling of the then 19-year-old bespectacled young man, who was making his debut in Old Trafford.

Now, 26 years later, the two players are in very different places. While Kumble has proceeded from administration to media to coaching, Lamb runs a global hospitality business and a sports series related to tourism.

Currently on a visit to India, Lamb's work is his primary focus during his stay. But he hopes to catch up with Kumble, with whom he also played county cricket at Northamptonshire in 1995. Speaking with India Today, Lamb said that the 46-year-old was the right choice to manage the star-studded Indian squad.

"I called him to congratulate when he was appointed India coach. I hope to catch up with him in Mumbai. Indian cricket is in safe hands under him," Lamb said.

So far, Kumble has had a great start to his tenure as India's coach; he hasn't yet lost a Test and has seen defeat in just two ODIs. Under him, India have already reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket, and they have a chance to stay in that position through some consistent performances in the upcoming matches.

During his player career, Lamb came to India on quite a few occasions and was part of the England side that won the Test series in 1984. Reminiscing about the good old days, he expressed that even though a lot has changed since then, he has loved coming back to the country.

"There is a big change now. I came here first in 1984. It’s a wonderful country and I love coming back here," he added.

The first India- England Test begins in Rajkot from the 9th of November.
