Ashes 1st Test Day 2 - Australia trail by 166 runs

Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers of Australia in action of Day 2 of the 1st Ashes Test

At the end of Day 2, Australia are 264/5 with Shane Watson (29) and night watchman Nathan Lyon (4) at the crease, trailing England by 166.

Earlier in the day, Moeen Ali combined with the tail to take England to a first innings score of 430. Chris Rogers was Australia’s best batsman of the day, scoring 95, as wickets fell in regular intervals at the other end. This was Rogers’ 7th consecutive score of between 50 and 100 – a strange statistical detail Voges would only be half proud of.

Moeen Ali’s spin proved to be the undoing of Steven Smith (33) and Michael Clarke (38) – providing the home team with two crucial breakthroughs just as Australia looked to be settling in for a big total.
