Asia Cup 2016: India vs Bangladesh - Player ratings
Indian opener Rohit Sharma made the most of a dropped chance to continue his fine run of form with a knock of 83 that held the Indian innings together after the loss of three early wickets before shifting gears, later on, to propel his side to 166 in 20 overs.
Hardik Pandya enhanced his big-hitting reputation further with a little cameo as India seized the momentum from Bangladesh who had got off to a good start only to end up losing by a margin of 45 runs.
Here are the player ratings for the Asia Cup opener:
India
Rohit Sharma (9/10)
Patience was the key after India lost early wickets and Rohit showed an abundance of that yesterday. He slowly started building his innings and once the runs started coming easily, his natural destructive batting came into force. He was, without a doubt, India’s first innings hero as he top scored with a 55-ball 83. He silenced the home supporters at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
Shikhar Dhawan (1/10)
Dhawan failed in the second over of the match itself as he was clean bowled by Al-Amin-Hossain’s in-swinging delivery. The ball found the wide gap between Dhawan's bat and pad as he looked to drive down the ground. India are quite dependent on Dhawan and he has to contribute by not losing his wicket early.
Virat Kohli (2/10)
The ground erupted like a volcano when Kohli was dismissed by Mashrafe Mortaza. He mistimed Mortaza’s pitched up delivery while trying to clear the mid-off fielder and gave away an easy catch. India needed Kohli to stay and support Rohit after Dhawan lost his wicket early in the game. He scored one boundary, but the opposition’s skipper read Kohli’s mind well. Kohli scored only 8 runs off the 12 balls he played.
Suresh Raina (4/10)
Raina came to the wicket with one aim - score runs and decrease the pressure on Rohit. It was Raina who came after the wickets of Dhawan and Kohli. He started swinging the bat from the very first ball he faced. After making a run-a-ball 15, he was dismissed by part-time spinner Mahmudullah – clean bowled off a straight delivery
Yuvraj Singh (4/10)
Yuvraj started well but couldn't convert his start into a good total. After Raina’s dismissal, it was all upto Rohit and him to start the re-building process. A decent effort in the field, collecting a catch plus saving some certain runs in the deep, he looked in his old avatar.
Hardik Pandya (8/10)
A cameo was needed down the order for India and Pandya provided that without much fuss. A square cut to start off his innings followed by a massive six to mid wicket, Pandya had the licence to kill to be on the attack. His 18-ball 31 included 4 fours and 1 six. He also removed Bangladesh’s top scorer Sabbir Rahman to put a full stop on the hosts’ chase.
MS Dhoni (8/10)
India needed a good finish after losing Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya in the final over of the match and the finishing master, Dhoni, provided that without fail. It was his second delivery and India’s last as he smashed the ball for a humongous six over square leg. Again a commendable effort behind the stumps with two catches and one involvement in a run-out. Some brilliant captaincy as well sees him get a good rating.
Ravindra Jadeja (7/10)
Jadeja didn’t get any wicket, but he didn’t give away a lot of runs too. He kept the pressure on from the other end as the other Indian bowlers did the rest. He gave away only 25 runs in his spell of four overs.
Ravichandran Ashwin (8/10)
He picked the much-needed wicket of Imrul Kayes, who was building a decent partnership with Sabbir Rahman. The 35-run partnership had brought back Bangladesh’s hopes in the game. India needed to strike again after getting quick early wickets to destabilize the opposition’s innings and Ashwin was the answer.
Ashish Nehra (9/10)
It was a vintage bowling performance from Nehra. He started off with swinging deliveries, troubling both the Bangladeshi openers from the first ball. The pacer was rewarded in his second over when his in-swinging delivery castled Mohammad Mithun. Then came two crucial wickets, first Mahmudullah and then Mashrafe Mortaza for a duck.
Jasprit Bumrah (8/10)
The pitch was made for his kind of bowling and he struck in his second over just like Nehra. In fact, he got the big fish Soumya Sarkar out. He continued his form from Australia and Sri Lanka in Mirpur.
