Australia vs New Zealand, 1st ODI Stats: Steve Smith and Martin Guptill's national records

Martin Guptill continued to show why he is one of the best limited-overs openers in the world

Steve Smith stole all the headlines in the first ODI between Australia and New Zealand. First it was with the bat, then it was courtesy of a brilliant catch to send home BJ Watling as the Australian captain put in a Man of the Match performance to give Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

It took a captain’s innings from Steve Smith to rescue Australia from 92/4 to 324/8 after the hosts had won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that was offering some early assistance to the seamers. He was ably assisted by Travis Head and Matthew Wade as they recovered from a tricky position to post a good total.
