Australia vs Pakistan 2016: Pakistan record 4th highest score in fourth innings of Tests

Asad Shafiq produced as good a fourth innings knock as you will see

In one of the most thrilling finishes that Test cricket has seen in recent times, Pakistan came within touching distance of breaking the record for the highest successful chase ever recorded in Test history, falling short by 39 runs on the fifth day of the opening Test against Australia in Brisbane.

Led by a superb 137 from Asad Shafiq, the Misbah-Ul-Haq led side made 450 in the 4th innings at the Gabba, falling short by 39 runs but winning the hearts of everybody witnessing proceedings at the ground and all around the world.

That total is now the fourth highest score ever made in the fourth innings in the history of Test cricket, joining South Africa, who made the same number in the Johannesburg Test of 2013 against India, where there were pursuing 458 for a win and settled for a draw in the  with 8 runs needed and 3 wickets in hand.

At 220 for 6 on the evening of the fourth day, it looked quite gloomy for the visitors, but Shafiq, along with Mohammad Amir began the rescue act and the duo added 92 critical runs and then Wahab Riaz joined the former and carried on the good work.

Starting the day at 382 for 8, it promised to be a thrilling day and that is exactly what the spectators got to see and after adding 67 runs, Shafiq was finally dismissed for 137, by a bouncer from Mitchell Starc and that opened the floodgates for the Aussies.

One run later, Yasir Shah – who had battled so well – was run out by Steve Smith, thereby bringing an end to one of most dramatic games Test cricket has seen in recent times.
