Australia vs South Africa, 2nd Test, day 1- Stats: Australia surrender to Philander's magic

South Africa embarrassed Australia on day 1 of the second Test between both these sides at Hobart. After dismissing Australia for 85, South Africa ended the day with a lead of 86.

After put into bat on a green pitch under overcast conditions, the hosts lost opener David Warner in the first over of the day. His opening partner Joe Burns followed him in the next over. Few balls later, Vernon Philander struck twice in an over to reduce the Aussies for 8-4 before substitute Dane Vilas ran debutant Callum Ferguson out to make it 17-5. Soon, it became 31-6 when Kagiso Rabada struck for the first time in this match.

Skipper Steve Smith and debutant Joe Mennie tried to pull things back under control, but Philander returned to dismiss Mennie before Kyle Abbott cleaned up Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. The world champions were bundled out for just 85 in the first innings when Philander claimed his fifth wicket by dismissing the last man Nathon Lyon for 2.

Only two Aussie batsmen managed to get into the double digits. Smith remained unbeaten on 48 while Philander was the pick of the Protea bowlers with a figure of 5-21.

In reply, South Africa were off to a decent start as they went into tea at 43-0. Starc struck off the first ball after tea to dismiss Dean Elgar for 17 before dismissing the other opener Simon Cook for 23 four balls later.  Starc had his third wicket in the very next over when he had JP Duminy caught in the slips for 1. Skipper Faf du Plessis was dismissed cheaply and Hashim Amla, along with Temba Bavuma staged a brilliant comeback before Hazlewood dismissed Amla for 47.

The visitors were 171-5 with a lead of 86 runs when the stumps were drawn for the day. Bavuma is unbeaten on 38 while Quinton de Kock is batting on 28.

This is the first time South Africa are without either Dale Steyn or AB de Villiers since both made their debut in December 2004.

14- This is the fourteenth time Australia were dismissed for less than 100 in an innings. 

85- This is Australia's lowest total in a home Test in 32 years. The previous lowest was in 1984 when they were bowled out for 76 against West Indies in Perth.

197- The number of deliveries faced by Australia in an innings before getting dismissed, their second shortest at home in terms of balls faced since 1936.

17- The score at which Australia have lost half their side in the first innings of a Test, the lowest in Australia’s cricket history. The previous lowest was 21 against England at Trent Bridge in 2015.

31- The score at which Australia lost their sixth wicket, their second-lowest in a home Test.

6/43- Australia's worst first session of a home Test.

2- Total number of runs scored by Australia's openers, the fewest they have scored since the Nottingham Test against England in 2015.

3- Number of instances in which the opposition has been dismissed for less than 100 runs in an innings and Philander has taken a five-wicket haul. Apart from today's game, Philander took 5 for 7 against New Zealand and 5 for 15 against Australia.

10- Vernon Philander scalped his tenth five-wicket haul in Tests.

15- Number of wickets fell on day 1 at Hobart, the most on any single day at the venue.

86- South Africa’s lead at the end of day 1, their fourth highest first innings lead at the end of day 1.
