The Aussies enjoy a perfect record over the Proteas in head-to-head encounters in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The two power packed teams have locked horns in the marquee event on two occasions across the last eight editions.
Their maiden meeting took place at the 2012 T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka, where the Aussies emerged victorious by a comprehensive margin of eight wickets.
Batting first, the Proteas huffed and puffed their way to an underwhelming 5/146 in 20 overs. Left-arm orthodox Xavier Doherty proved to be the most effective bowler for the Aussies, claiming 3/20 in four overs.
In response, Australia lost David Warner cheaply, but Shane Watson (70 off 47), Michael Hussey (45* off 37), and later Cameron White (21* off 13) ensured their side breezed past the target in 17.4 overs.
It took over nine years for the Australians and South Africans to meet again at the global showpiece event. The encounter took place in Abu Dhabi, where the Aussies once again triumphed over the Proteas, this time by five wickets.
Batting first, South Africa struggled their way to an abysmal 118/9 in 20 overs, which Australia, despite an early stutter, chased down in the final over, thanks to unbeaten cameos from Marcus Stoinis (24* off 16) and Matthew Wade (15* off 10).
