Australian Chris Rogers unsure about Australia's No.1 Test ranking
Australia has retrieved its number one Test ranking in world cricket. Quite understandably, Australian skipper, Michael Clarke is happy with the team’s achievement.
“We are incredibly proud to be the number-one ranked team in Test and ODI cricket in the world, which are two of the team’s most important goals,” he said.
However, what surprised many people was opening batsman, Chris Rogers’ uncertainty whether his team deserves to be ranked world number one in Tests.
Rogers seemed unconvinced about the ranking of his team. “I don’t know, personally,” Rogers told Cricket Australia’s website. “Obviously, there’s still some unfinished business,” he added.
“Losing four-nil in India – you can’t do that if you’re number one – but I think to beat South Africa in South Africa meant a lot. They were number one and to go beat them in their place; I think that is a big achievement. I think we’re going in the right direction and we just need to keep playing well,” he said.
Apart from Rogers, Australian cricket writer, Greg Baum also feels that Australia does not deserve the top ranking by winning against South Africa in recent times alone. Australia lost 4-0 in India last year followed by a 3-0 loss in England. But they managed to beat England 5-0 in the Ashes series and South Africa 2-1 this year.
“Australia is No.1 again not so much because they beat South Africa a few moments ago, but because previous adverse results no longer count,” Baum mentioned in The Age newspaper.
“It is the fishing fleet who stayed out and won the premiership. Good on Australia, for now. But as much as this vindicates Australia, it betrays the shallowness of world cricket.” he added.
