Australian cricketers wear black arm bands in remembrance of Phil Hughes
Day 3 of the Australia-South Africa Test was not just another day of Test cricket. It was also the death anniversary of the late Phillip Hughes, who passed away on the 27th of November 2014 in a hospital in Sydney.
As a mark fo respect for the beloved cricketer, all the Australian players were seen wearing black armbands at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, in remembrance of Hughes. Not just will the national team players, but also players from South Australia, the team Hughes last represented also wore black armbands during their Sheffield Shield game against Victoria.
“We’ll have something planned as a team quietly, but nothing massive,” South Australian skipper Travis Head said on Saturday.
The left-hander, who was fice days short of the 26th birthday was hit on the side of his head by a Sean Abbott delivery on the 25th of November 2014 and was admitted at the St. Vincent Hospital in Sydney.
The game was abandoned immediately and the other domestic games, which were played across the country during the time were also called off.
He underwent a surgery and was placed into an induced coma. The doctors described Hughes’s injury as rare and but described type of sport-related blunt-force cerebrovascular injury called a vertebral artery dissection which led to subarachnoid haemorrhage.
On 27th November 2014, Hughes passed away because of various injuries. The then Australian skipper Michael Clarke read a statement on behalf of Hughes’s family. Cricket Australi had also announced that an independent review will be conducted into the cricketer’s death.
