Australia's campaign came to an end after suffering a defeat from the hosts by 8 wickets in Edgbaston. England have given themselves an opportunity to lift the World Cup for the very first time in the iconic stadium, Lord's by defeating the five-time World Champions. The Kangaroos looked altogether a different team after the inclusion of David Warner and Steve Smith in their squad after their return from the ban.

Sportskeeda got an opportunity to interact with Lachy Patterson who has served as the Communications Manager for Cricket Australia. He talks about the journey of the defending champions in this World Cup along with his role in the team.

Australia qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup. According to you, what has been that particular ingredient that paved Australia's way to success?

Lachy: It would seem that the entire touring squad has gelled as a tight unit under the tutelage of coach Justin Langer and his staff. The group seem to be happy and excited by the many challenges they have faced in this tournament and this is a testament to the work of the coaching and management staff and the player’s leadership group.

Australia looked altogether as a different team after the return of David Warner and Steve Smith. What roles have these two players played in your opinion on the team?

Lachy: Both Steve [Smith] and David [Warner] are extremely experienced and talented players who add many facets to the Australian squad. It is obvious that their on-field contributions have been important but what cannot be underestimated will be their off-field impact, something that has no doubt contributed to the Australian team’s success thus far.

You were the Communications Manager for Cricket Australia. What challenges did you face in your job?

Lachy: Many challenges were faced on a daily basis, both from internal and external pressures. The challenge of providing adequate access to the ever-growing media contingent was no doubt the most difficult in an environment where having exclusive and regular access is such an enticing prospect for the thousands of cricket media contributors around the world.

What makes the Australian team different from the rest of the teams in this World Cup?

Lachy: Every team in the World Cup has something that makes them different, Australia being no different. I would like to think it is the way the Australians have prepared, both physically and mentally, for what is a long and difficult tournament. Of course, the experience this team has of success at ICC tournaments will also hold them in very good stead.

You've seen the Australian team closely after the sandpaper-gate. How would you like to comment upon the leadership of Tim Paine and Aaron Finch after the incident?

Lachy: I haven’t actually seen the team up close since the issues in South Africa but from a distance, I have been extremely impressed by the leadership of Tim [Paine] and Aaron [Finch]. Both are fine players but particularly, they are people of the highest quality. Their efforts in leading these teams, in conjunction with Justin, has been first rate and certainly something they should be congratulated for. They have made Australians proud of their cricket team once more.

Which particular incident with Cricket Australia would you like to cherish for your entire life?

Lachy: Any moment someone has the privilege of spending with an international sporting team is to be cherished. I was very lucky to spend many years of my life touring the world and working closely with a group of people who became close friends and excellent role models for others. The memories created through on-field and off-field moments will live with me forever.
