Axar Patel and Josh Hazelwood make giant strides as ICC annouce latest ODI rankings

Axar Patel moved up twenty spots to achieve a career-best ranking of 13 as per the latest ICC ODI rankings

India’s 3-0 ODI series whitewash against Zimbabwe saw MS Dhoni’s men jump gain one more point to maintain fourth spot in the latest MRF Tyres ODI team cricket rankings while left-arm spinner Axar Patel moved to a career-best 13th rank, despite picking up only three wickets against the African minnows.

The ongoing tri-series in the Carribean also had an impact on the rankings with Australia’s Josh Hazelwood climbing nineteen spots to the number 18 in the bowler’s rankings while the hosts West Indies have benefitted with their victories over Australia and South Africa, gaining five points.

Rohit Sharma’s absence from the Zimbabwe tour saw the 29-year-old lose two spots, dropping down to the seventh spot with Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan and the New Zealand pair of Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill benefitting from the Indian opener’s absence.

With the five-match ODI series between England and Sri Lanka commencing on Tuesday in Nottingham, the hosts, who are outright favourites after winning the Test series 2-0, will be aiming to move ahead of the visitors who are just one spot ahead of England at the moment. A 4-1 series win for the hosts will see England leapfrog Sri Lanka while an unlikely 5-0 whitewash in favour of the visitors will see them move ahead of India to claim the fourth spot.

Three spinners make up the Top 5 and a couple of them have recently shown why they deserve to be there. While West Indies’ Sunil Narine started off the tri-series with a six-wicket haul against South Africa, a reversal of fortunes ensued as the hosts were destroyed by Imran Tahir’s seven-wicket spell that has set the tri-series up for an interesting finale.
