Axed from national squad, Kevin Pietersen signs new contract with Surrey

Kevin Pietersen of Surrey celebrates his century during day three of the LV County Championship Division One match between Yorkshire and Surrey at Headingley on June 23, 2013 in Leeds, England.

Recently sacked by the English Cricket Board (ECB), Kevin Pietersen has agreed to sign a new contract with English county side Surrey for the 2014 season.

He will be playing in the NatWest T20 Blast for Surrey and, also could make himself available for first-class County Championship matches.

“We are delighted to have agreed terms with Kevin, and to have a player of his ability at the Kia Oval,” Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart said.

“Unsurprisingly there was a great deal of interest in Kevin from around the world, but he has made it very clear that he wants to play at Surrey and it is not only good news for the Club but for the domestic game in this country.”

“We are now looking forward to watching him in the middle, scoring a bucket load of runs for Surrey.”

Pietersen was told by the ECB last week that he was not going to be called up during England’s tour of the Caribbean later this month and the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in Bangladesh in March despite him being the top-scorer in the last Ashes series.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have agreed terms with Surrey and am thoroughly looking forward to playing my cricket for the Club this summer,” said Pietersen.

“I’ve had some of my best moments in cricket at the Kia Oval and I’m really excited at the prospect of getting back out there playing in what will hopefully be a brilliant summer for us all at Surrey.”
