Bangladesh lose Imrul Kayes chasing 550 runs to win

Momimul Haque and Tamim Iqbal returning back after the day’s play

Mirpur, May 8 (IANS) Bangladesh lost a wicket in the closing minutes of the third day's play while chasing 550 runs to win the second and last cricket Test against Pakistan here on Friday.

The hosts were 63 for one at stumps with Tamim Iqbal (32) and Mominul Haque (15) in the middle at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, reports bdnews24.com.

A total of 12 wickets fell on the day as Pakistan bundled out Bangladesh for 203 to take a huge first innings lead of 354.

The tourists did not enforce the follow-on and opted to bat their second innings.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (82) led his team to post 195 for six declared in the second innings, to help them take an overall lead of 549 runs. Misbah's 72-ball innings contained nine boundaries and three sixes.

Bangladesh need 487 more to win with nine wickets remaining and six sessions still to be played.

West Indies hold the record of highest successful run chase in the fourth innings. They chased down 418 against Australia at Antigua in 2003.

Bangladesh were off to a fluent start in their chase as Tamim cut Junaid Khan through backward point in the first over and went on to hit several more boundaries off the Pakistan seamers.

Tamim cracked Imran Khan in a crisp drive through the covers to become the second Bangladesh batsman to notch 3,000 Test runs, after Habibul Bashar.

Misbah brought Yasir Shah into the attack and was rewarded when the leg spinner turned the ball sharply to go through the gates of Kayes (16).

Mominul Haque arrived at the crease and put Wahab Riaz away for three boundaries as Bangladesh reached 50 in the 13th over.

Mominul got a life on 5 when he slashed hard at Wahab but was put down by Shah at the point.

Earlier, Bangladesh failed to bat for two whole sessions. The hosts were skittled out for 203 before lunch after adding a meagre 96 runs to their overnight score.

Starting the day on 107 for five, Bangladesh were under pressure from the outset and Pakistan had to bat out three overs before lunch but Bangladesh sent back their opener before the break.
