Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina: We would have won if not for umpiring errors

Bangladeshi cricket fans prepare to set fire to the effigies of umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould

According to news website bdnews24.com, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina believes that Bangladesh would have defeated India and made it to the semi-finals of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup if not some errors from the umpires.

Hasina called the entire Bangladeshi team who were at a reception in Melbourne and told them that they will be champions one day.

“We would have won if the umpires did not give wrong decisions. Bangladesh will win in the future. Bangladesh will become world champions someday,” she supposedly said. “There’s nothing to be upset. Everyone has seen how we were made to lose. We will win in the future.”

Yesterday, ICC President Mustafa Kamal, who hails from Bangladesh, had threatened to quit after he claimed that the umpiring errors could have been a ‘delibrate’ attempt to eliminate the Mashrafe Mortaza-led side from the World Cup.

"It could be deliberate. Though I can’t say it absolutely but it looks like that. I know in cricket, human errors are quite possible, but how can a dozen decisions go against Bangladesh? It was very, very poor umpiring.

"I was there in the ground and I saw whatever happened. What happened was just not on, so many mistakes cannot take place in a single match. It naturally created a furore among the fans," he said.

In the 40th over of the India-West Indies match, Rohit Sharma was caught at deep midwicket from a Rubel Hossain full toss. The Bangladesh players were set to celebrate when the square leg umpire Aleem Dar signalled to Ian Gould that it was a no-ball.

But replays showed that it was a bad decision and Rohit who was batting on 90 at the time, went on to slam 137 to guide India to a massive victory.
