Shahadat Hossain and wife could be jailed for 14 years for assaulting minor girl

Arrested Bangladeshi pacer Shahadat Hossain now finds himself facing 14 years in jail for abusing an under-aged maid. A Bangladeshi Court has directed the maligned cricketer and his wife to face trial.

The court's ruling came as a decisive move in the case registered against Hossain and his wife in relation to torturing the 11-year old girl. However, the Dhaka-born player has vehemently refuted the allegations leveled against him.

Prosecutor Ali Asgar Swapan met reporters and spoke about the case which was heard at a special court for women and children in the country’s capital. The legal representative revealed, “The judge indicted them for grievously hurting the maid and formally ordered their trial.”

Police officials had also attested to the charges against the pair and confirmed that they had indeed mistreated the victim. When the news broke out, the Bangladesh Cricket Board swiftly suspended Shahadat from all forms of cricket.

The Board President had asserted, “We didn't expect this from a senior cricketer like him. We are embarrassed.”

Earlier, the 29-year old and his wife went into hiding after the issue was highlighted by the media. The law enforcement officers publicly asserted that the girl’s hand was swollen due to a burn caused by a spoon and her physical condition was also said to be quite weak with swollen eyes.

Hossain was subsequently remanded to jail after he surrendered himself to the cops. Following the arrest, the seamer had claimed openly that he was victimized by the media and the allegations had ruined his cricket career.

The fast bowler who features in the Lord’s honours board after his five-wicket haul against the England Test team, has played 95 international matches for his country. He has over 120 wickets across all formats.

Despite his inconsistency, Shahadat was capable of bowling with decent pace and could trouble the batsmen with his deceptive bounce.
