Bangladesh vs England, 1st Test Day 1 Stats: Alastair Cook breaks England record, Bairstow closing in on world record

Fresh from breaking the England record, Cook will now have his eyes set on the world record

Fifties from Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow meant that the honours were even at the end of day one of the first Test between Bangladesh and England. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England ended day one on 258/7, which was a wonderful fightback from 21/3.

England might have been overjoyed at winning the toss in Asia but 18-year-old debutant Mehedi Hasan Miraz outshone the four debutants on show by picking up a five-wicket hauls and finished the day with five of the seven wickets to fall on the first day.

With the ball turning from the outset, it looked as though England had their task cut out and the hosts were on top but Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow both scored fifties to rescue the visitors to a position of safety on a pitch which is only going to get worse for batting.

Here are some interesting numbers from day one of the first Test:

1 – Only one wicketkeeper, Andy Flower has more runs in a calendar year than Jonny Bairstow. With a maximum of six more Tests to go before the end of the year, it is fair to say that it is only a matter of time before Bairstow breaks the world record for most runs in a calendar year by a wicketkeeper in Tests.

2 – Courtesy of his fifty in the first innings, Bairstow became only the second keeper to cross 1,000 runs in a calendar year in Tests. The other is the record holder, Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower.

3 – Since their debut Test, this is the first time that Bangladesh have fielded three debutants in a Test. Sabbir Rahman, Kamural Islam Rabbi and Mehedi Hasan Miraz.

4 – Mehedi Hasan is the fourth-youngest to take a five-for on Test debut. The youngest is Australia’s Pat Cummins who took it when he was just 18 years and 193 days. Mehedi is 18 years and 361 days old.

5 – The number of English records Alastair Cook currently has in his possession. He holds the English record for most Test matches played, most Test runs, most Test centuries, most international runs and most international centuries.

6 – Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow now have six fifty-plus stands in Tests in 2016, which is the most for a pair in a calendar year batting at six or lower.

6 – England's 6th wicket has added at least 50 runs in six consecutive Test innings. The streak began against Pakistan at Old Trafford.

7 – Mehedi Hasan Miraz is the seventh Bangladeshi bowler to take a five-for on Test debut.

134 – The number of Tests, Alastair Cook has played in his career. By opening the innings in this match, he went past Alec Stewart, who held the English record by playing in 133 Tests.

142 – Gareth Batty mssed a total of 142 Tests between his previous Test appearances, which is the most by any player between two appearances. The previous-record was held by another Englishman, Martin Bicknell who missed 114 matches between two Test appearances.

984 – Jonny Bairstow now holds the record for most runs in a calendar year while batting at No.6 or lower in Tests. The previous record was held by VVS Laxman, who had 984 runs in 2002.

1992 – The last time England had a Test XI that comprised of players who all had a first-class century to their name was in 1992 against Pakistan at Birmingham.
