Bangladesh vs England, 2nd Test, Day 1- Stats: Alastair Cook creates history
After an initial struggle, England pulled things back against Bangladesh on day 1 of the second Test at Mirpur. After losing Imrul Kayes early, Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque put on a 170-run partnership for the second wicket to put their side on a commanding position. When Tamim was dismissed for 104 and Mominul followed him to the pavilion after scoring 66, the floodgates opened as Bangladesh lost their last 9 wickets for just 49 runs and were dismissed for 220 in the first innings.
Moeen Ali was the wrecker-in-chief as he took his second fifer in Tests. He was backed well by Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes, who took 3 wickets and 2 wickets respectively. There was an incident in Bangladesh’s first innings in which a delivery from Ben Stokes hit the back of the helmet of Bangladeshi skipper, Mushfiqur Rahim, who was fortunate to survive in spite of using an old helmet (without any protection at the back).
In return, Bangladesh spinners struck early to have England reeling at 50-3 when the play for the day was called off early due to rain. Mehdi Hasan scalped two wickets while veteran Shakib-al-Hasan bagged one. Joe Root (15) and Moeen Ali (2) are at the crease for the Poms when the play ended.
