Powered by centuries from veterans Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka hammered a hapless Bangladesh by 92 runs in a World Cup Group A encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday. The former World champions reached a mammoth total of 332 for the loss of only one wicket. In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 240 in only 47 overs. With this win, the Lankans stepped up to second place in the Group A standings behind New Zealand.
Here are the player ratings for today’s match:
Bangladesh
Tamim Iqbal
Rating: 0/10
Tamim was clean bowled off the second ball he faced by Malinga for a duck. The southpaw failed to keep his bat and pad together as the ball snuck through the defense onto the stumps.
Anamul Haque
Rating: 3/10
Anamul Haque spilled an easy chance in the slips during Sri Lanka’s innings and coming into bat could only muster 29 runs off 43 balls.
Soumya Sarkar
Rating: 4/10
Soumya looked extremely good in the short period he stayed in the wicket hitting 5 fours in his 25 runs off 15 balls before edging behind.
Mominul Haque
Rating:0/10
Mominul Haque could only score one run in his brief stay in the middle but his major crime was dropping a simple chance at backward point when Sanga cut a short ball straight to him.
Mahmudullah
Rating: 3/10
Mahmudallah was expensive with the ball, and with the bat he struggled in the middle to keep the Bangladesh’s innings alive with no avail.
Shakib Ul Hasan
Rating: 9/10
Shakib shined with both bat and ball, bowling his full quota of overs that went only for 55 runs and coming back to bat scored 46 runs that injected some life into the chase.
Mushfiqur Rahim
Rating: 4/10
Rahim was dodgy behind the stumps but with the bat he scored 36 runs off 39 balls. The bruise he suffered in his hand was evident in the way he kept wickets and Bangladesh would be hoping that he would rectify his mistakes in the games to come.
Sabbir Rahman
Rating: 7/10
Sabbir Rahman bowled his leg breaks quite thriftily and wielding the bat launched a valuable rear guard scoring 52 runs.
Mashrafe Mortaza
Rating: 6/10
Mortaza was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers, blowing his full quota of overs that went at 5.3 runs per over.
Rubel Hossain
Rating: 3/10
Rubel bowled the fastest ball of the match but leaked runs at 6.88 runs per over. He stands singular among the rest of the Bangladeshi bowlers as he was the lone wicket taker today.
Taskin Ahmed
Rating: 2/10
Taskin was the most expensive bowler today letting 8.2 runs flow off each of his overs on average.
Sri Lanka
Lahiru Thirimanne
Rating:6/10
Thirimanne thrived on his luck but made sure Sri Lanka didn’t lose a wicket until they put up 122 runs on the board. The left-hander was eventually ,the only batsman dismissed in Sri Lanka’s innings.
TM Dilshan
Rating: 10/10
Dilshan brought up his third 160+ score which made him the only batsman with two 150 plus scores in Australia. Dilshan rotated the strike and played a subdued innings before culminating his innings in a catharsis. With the ball, Dilshan bowled 8 overs and picked up 2 wickets making this game Dilshan’s own.
Kumar Sangakkara
Rating: 10/10
Sanga brought up his fastest century striking at the rate of 138.15 in his 400th ODI. The southpaw took full toll of some dropped catches as he made the Bangladeshis pay for their mistakes on field.
Lasith Malinga
Rating: 9/10
Malinga almost returned to his best in the match against Bangladesh, bowling close to his usual menacing pace and finding accuracy with his yorkers. The slinger picked up a wicket off his second ball and finished the match with three wickets.
Suranga Lakmal
Rating: 7/10
Despite having “Luck” in his name, Lakmal was really unlucky as the Sri Lankan fielders spilled no less than three catches off his bowling. Lakmal had the ball moving in the air and looked threatening during his 8 overs. Lakmal picked up a brace of wickets but could have had more had the fielders clung on to their chances.
Angelo Mathews
Rating: 5/10
Mathews didn’t get to bat, but with the ball despite picking up a wicket in his first over, leaked a lot of runs. His economy rate of 6.35 was significantly higher for a bowler who usually gives no more than 5 runs per over.
Rangana Herath
Rating: 8/10
The experienced talisman strangulated the Bangladeshi batsmen during the middle overs notwithstanding the lack of turn on the track. Herath varied his flight and length and was too tough to get away making sure Bangladesh do not claw their way back into the game.
Thisara Perera
Rating: 5/10
Perera despite not being at his best with the ball, bowled 7.2 overs that went for 33 runs. However the right handed bowler, pulled back from his 8th over midway with an aching back. Perera was on the field, hence the issue shouldn’t be serious.
