BCCI considering performance-based incentives for players

Performance based incentives to be given to the International players

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) is contemplating performance-based financial incentives for the international cricketers. This scheme was proposed during the finance committee's meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday and the final decision on this will be taken in the next meeting on July 22.

Indian Premier League chief operating officer, Sundar Raman was asked to fabricate a presentation on the elementary structure of performance-based incentives by the finance committee. Raman explained that an overseas series win against a big team would fetch the player a larger bonus than a home win against lesser ranked team.

The final call on this proposal will be taken in the next three weeks after studying its feasibility. The performance-based rewards system will be an added incentive to all other benefits that the players enjoy, a committee member confirmed.

The BCCI awards a match fee of Rs. 7,00,000 for every Test, Rs. 4,00,000 for every ODI and Rs. 2,00,000 for every T20 International appearance. The players also receive an annual grade-based retainer of Rs. 1 crore for Grade ‘A’ players, Rs. 50 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh for Grade ‘B’ and Grade ‘C’ players respectively.

BCCI vice-president Shankar Mohan had proposed a similar proposition after India’s disappointing performance in the World Cup 2007. However, it was eventually turned down.

Women’s team retainer system

The committee also decided to device a retainer system for the Women’s cricket team in two grades starting from October 1. Grade ‘A’ players are proposed to draw Rs. 10 lakh annually and Grade ‘B’ players will receive an annual retainer of Rs. 5 lakh.

Cheif selector Shanta Rangaswamy, after consultation with BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur and President Jagmohan Dalmiya will finalise the number of players to be offered retainers.
