BPL 2016: Dawid Malan, Rayad Emrit help Barisal Bulls end losing streak

Malan scored 56 off only 33 deliveries

An explosive half-century at the top of the innings by Middlesex’s Dawid Malan backed up by some tight medium pace bowling by West Indian Rayad Emrit helped the Barisal Bulls beat the Rajshahi Kings by 17 runs in match 36 of the Bangladesh Premier League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today.

Put in to bat after losing the toss, the Bulls started poorly and lost the Sri Lankan all-rounder Jeevan Mendis in just the 2nd over of the innings to spin sensation Mehedi Hasan Miraz. Dawid Malan and number 3 Fazle Mahmud then tore into the Kings bowling and strung together a partnership of 100 in under 12 overs.

Malan was especially aggressive in the partnership and smashed 3 sixes and 6 fours in his innings of 56 off only 33 deliveries, but both of them were dismissed in the same over and that put the brakes on the scoring rate. Useful cameos at the end from Thisara Perera and Shahriar Nafees took the score to a fighting 161 for 4 at the end of 20 overs, with the last over going for 17 runs.

In reply, the Kings started brightly and raced to 22 off just 2 overs with openers Mominul Haque and Nurul Hasan playing some quality strokes. Left-arm spinner Monir Hossain got Nurul out in the third over, and star batsman Sabbir Rahman soon followed.

The Kings kept losing wickets at regular periods and the Bulls spinners kept things extremely tight in the middle overs. England all-rounder Samit Patel tried his best to keep his team in the hunt with a knock of 62 off 51 balls but he got almost no support from the other end, with the second-highest score of the innings being just 18 by New Zealander James Franklin.

Rayad Emrit bowled beautifully with changes of pace and accounted for Rahman, Patel and Farhad Reza to derail the Kings innings. The target came down to 28 off the last over but that proved to be too much, even for the big hitting Kings captain Darren Sammy as he could only score 10 off it with a six and a four, seeing his team fall short by a margin of 17 runs.

The win was the first for the Bulls after 6 losses on the trot and they remain at no.7 on the table whereas the Kings are now at no.4. Rayad Emrit, for his tight as well as wicket-taking spell of 3 for 27, was named the man of the match.

Brief Scores: Barisal Bulls - 161/4 (Dawid Malan 56, Fazle Mahmud 43, Mohammad Sami 1 for 16, Farhad Reza 1 for 32); Rajshahi Kings - 144/7 (Samit Patel 62, James Franklin 18, Rayad Emrit 3 for 27, Enamul Haque 1 for 6)

Result: Barisal Bulls won by 17 runs.
