BPL 2019: Another Indian jailed for involvement in betting
What's the story?
An Indian citizen has been jailed for one month by a mobile court for alleged involvement in betting in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League. He was reportedly involved in betting in BPL matches held at Bangladesh's Sylhet International Stadium.
The background
A week ago, five bookies from India were arrested and fined for being involved in illegal betting in the Bangladesh Premier League. All of them hailed from Haryana and they were arrested from the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka.
On similar grounds, yet another arrest of an Indian citizen has been made in Bangladesh.
The details
An inter-ministerial meeting in January last year empowered local administration in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet to run mobile courts to tackle illegal betting in the BPL.
Accordingly, The executive magistrate of a mobile court Mohammed Mainul Hossain Chowdhury has passed the judgment after the accused was guilty of illegal betting. The accused was trying to contact people in India many times and this was used as major evidence to hand the sentence.
Imran Pashar was the accused and he hails from Bihar. Imran could only speak in Hindi and was not aware of the local language Bengali. He also did not possess a passport or any other identification documents and was allegedly betting from Bangladesh. Imran confessed his offense and assured the authorities of not repeating it again. He was later handed jail for one-month based on these accounts.
Bangladesh Cricket Board security chief Hossain Imam was also involved in the procedure and has assured of a betting free BPL henceforth.
What's next?
The BPL has become prey to illegal betting this season and the league has also faced similar issued with match-fixing in its earlier editions. The bookie gang arrest and the latest incident of the arrest of an Indian is further proof to the league's vulnerability. Hence, the board should focus on tackling these untoward incidents in the future.
