Brendan Taylor woken up by police after spending night in unlocked car

Brendan Taylor was found asleep in the back of a car near Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire’s home ground.

Former Zimbabwe international cricketer Brendan Taylor had to be woken up by the police after he was found asleep in an unlocked car, The Guardian reports. The wicket-keeper batsman had been celebrating his county side Nottinghamshire’s progress to the semi-finals of the Royal London One-Day Cup the previous night before things took a turn for the worse.

Michael Whitaker, a resident of West Bridgford, close to the Trent Bridge ground where Nottinghamshire play their home matches, alerted the police after finding Taylor at the back of his car.

"I did not know what to do," he said. "Someone I didn't know had fallen asleep in our car. An officer tried to wake him up and when he came round, he was dazed. It was the most bizarre situation I think I have ever been in.”

The Nottinghamshire police confirmed that the situation was under control as Taylor was sheepish but calm after he was woken up by them. One of the police officers who attended the scene said: “We attended the scene but concluded that no offence had been committed. The man in the car was extremely apologetic and even offered to get the car valeted.”

Whitaker later admitted that he didn’t know that the person he stumbled upon was the famous cricketer.

“I don’t think he knew where he was but he was very apologetic and it quickly became clear that it was very innocent,” he said. “Realising who it was made it even funnier because how often do you find an international cricket star asleep in your car?”

Though Whitaker was able to see the funny side of the incident it remains to be seen what action Taylor faces from Nottinghamshire. Neither the county nor the player has publically responded to the incident yet.
