Brendon McCullum set to deliver MCC Spirit of Cricket lecture on Monday

The 2016 MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey lecture will be delivered by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum in London on Monday. The official website of Lords announced the 34-year-old becoming the second Kiwi to be bestowed this honor after the iconic Martin Crowe.

An elated McCullum enthused, “It was an honour to be asked to deliver the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture especially given the stature of some previous speakers. So, I was very pleased to accept the invitation.”

On the various facets of the sport which he would like to speak about, the aggressive cricketer felt, “There are a number of important issues in world cricket at the moment that I am looking forward to addressing and I hope it is an interesting evening for everyone watching.“

McCullum’s selection to address the Spirit of Cricket was apt considering his impeccable disciplinary record and the manner in which he played the game. One of the most respected cricketers of his generation, he fashioned a New Zealand outfit akin to his beliefs –  entertaining and affable.

The charismatic cricketer will also be inducted into the MCC World Cricket Committee on October 1 for his contribution to the game. He was nominated by Chairman Mike Brearley and MCC Head of Cricket John Stephenson.

In addition to being a trend-setting leader, the right-hander has scored over 14,000 international runs from 432 matches. During his final Test against Australia, he smashed the fastest ever century from just 54 balls to cap off a memorable career.

Brendon will join an illustrious list of legendary players such as Richie Benaud, Barry Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Clive Lloyd, Geoffrey Boycott, Adam Gilchrist, Imran Khan, Kumar Sangakkara, Tony Greig, Ian Botham and Rod Marsh.

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session which will be hosted by Mark Nicholas. McCullum will be joined by Sangakkara and current England limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan in a special panel that would discuss pertinent issues surrounding the sport.

In what will be a first such instance, viewers all over the world will get to see the entire event on Lord’s YouTube Channel and also the Lord’s Facebook page.
