Video: Brett Lee's incredible final over
“Heroes come and go, but legends never die” is something that has been said of many sportspersons over the years. And as the sun sets on the career of Brett Lee, this quote couldn’t be more significant.
The former Australian fast bowler went out with a bang, after delivering a brilliant final over in the final of the Big Bash League (BBL) on Wednesday. With just 8 runs needed to win and with 6 wickets in hand, going into the last over, Perth Scorchers looked like firm favourites against Lee’s Sydney Sixers.
When Michael Carberry scooped the first delivery of the over, over short fine leg for a boundary, it looked like victory was in the bag for the Scorchers. Carberry consolidated by running a 2 and then a single to bring the equation down to 1 run needed from 3 deliveries.
Nathan Coulter-Nile was on strike and attempted to replay the scoop shot which Carberry had played on the first ball of the over, but failed and saw the ball crash into his stumps. Was there a twist on the cards? But with 1 need from 2 balls, you’d surely be banking on the batting team.
22-year-old Sam Whiteman came out to bat and was greeted by a brilliant full delivery from Lee. The stumps were shattered once again and suddenly, there was a match on at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
1 run from 1 ball. Brett Lee on a hat-trick and running in to bowl the final delivery of his career. The fairytale of all fairytales was on.
Lee went with another full delivery and batsman Yasir Arafat only managed to hit it straight to a fielder inside the 30-yard circle. The fielder made no mistake as he picked the ball and threw it perfectly to Moises Henriques who was waiting at the non-striker’s end. The Sixers captain, though, couldn’t grab hold of the ball and missed an easy run-out opportunity to hand Perth Scorchers their second successive BBL title.
