CPL 2014: Miguel Cummins concedes 21 runs off a single legal delivery

Antigua Hawksbills’ Miguel Cummins got into the history books for all the wrong reasons as he conceded 21 runs after bowling just one legal delivery against Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 yesterday, briefly leaving him with figures of 0.1-0-21-0.

Marlon Samuels, captain of the Hawksbills, won the toss and chose to field. The Hawksbills got off to a good start as they got rid of Lendl Simmons and Mohammad Hafeez, two distinguished international batsmen, cheaply and had them 52/2 after the first 6 overs. But it all went pear-shaped for Samuels and co. with the introduction of Cummins into the bowling attack.

His first delivery was a huge no-ball which luckily went unpunished as Denesh Ramdin whacked the ball straight to the mid-on fielder for no run. The second ball, which was once again a no-ball, was a low full toss on off-stump which Ramdin could only manage to miscue to mid-on for one run, bringing the well-settled Guptill to the striker’s end. By this time, you would’ve thought that Cummins would’ve rectified his issue but he didn’t, and Guptill wasn’t going to be as generous as Ramdin.

The New Zealander hammered the third consecutive no-ball in the over for an 82 meter six over the deep midwicket boundary. Cummins bowled yet another no-ball which went for 2 runs before the next delivery was dispatched by Guptill for another six to the same region as the previous one. The only saving grace for Cummins was that he hadn’t overstepped on that occasion, but the bowler’s misery didn’t end there.

He followed up the previous valid delivery, which was bludgeoned for six, with his fifth no-ball of the over which was guided to third man for a single, making it 21 runs off a single legal delivery and beating Clint McKay’s dubious record of conceding 20 runs off 1 ball to Travis Birt.
