Carlton Mid ODI tri-series - England vs India: Facts and figures

Steven Finn

England crushed India by 9 wickets in the third match of the Carlton Mid tri-series at the Gabba in Brisbane on Tuesday. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India got off to a horrible start with Shikhar Dhawan, once again falling cheaply, caught by Jos Buttler off the bowling of James Anderson.

Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu then tried to steady the ship, but once Rahane fell for 33, the Indians lost their way in the game. Kohli followed soon, so did Raina and only a crucial 70-run stand between MS Dhoni and Stuart Binny helped India go past the 100-run mark.

Once Dhoni was gone for 34, the lower-order couldn't contribute and India were skittled out for 153 in 39.3 overs. Steven Finn was the wrecker-in-chief, picking up 5 for 33 in 8 overs while James Anderson picked up four wickets

In reply, England lost Moeen Ali early to Binny but Ian Bell and James Taylor steadied the ship and scored unbeaten half-centuries to guide their side to a comfortable nine-wicket win. Crucially, England chased the score down within 40 overs and thereby secured a bonus point as well.

153 – India’s lowest ever all-out score in an ODI against England.

12  Number of years since India last played an ODI versus England at a neutral venue. Their last encounter was during the 2003 World Cup in Durban.

135 Number of deliveries left when England overhauled India’s target of 154. This is their biggest margin of victory over India in terms of balls to spare.

5 – Number of times Steven Finn has dismissed Ajinkya Rahane in ODIs. Surprisingly, no other bowler has got the right-hander out on more than two occasions.

8 Number of runs scored by India in their first 5 overs on Tuesday. This was their lowest since 2005 when they scored 6 runs in the first 5 overs against South Africa in Hyderabad.

0 – Number of times India have won after scoring 200 runs or less in their first innings in a full ODI against England.

7 – MS Dhoni has been involved in seven out of India’s last 11 50-run partnerships for the sixth wicket.

5  Number of dismissals effected by Jos Buttler on Tuesday. He picked up 4 catches and also managed to pull off a stumping off the bowling of Moeen Ali. With that, he is now tied first with Courtney Browne and Mattew Wade for the most number of dismissals for a wicket-keeper at the Gabba.

39 Number of wickets taken by James Anderson against India in ODI cricket. He has now surpassed Andrew Flintoff’s tally of 37 wickets, to become England’s leading wicket-taker against India in the format.

2  Steven Finn’s 5 for 33 on Tuesday are the second best bowling figures recorded by an Englishman against India. The best figures belong to Ronnie Irani, who took 5 for 26 against the Men in Blue in 2002.

2  Only the second time that England have beaten India by nine wickets or more in an ODI. The previous instance was in Headingley in 1982.
