The good times are rolling for the Karnataka cricket team. After beating Maharashtra by 7 wickets at Hyderabad to capture their 7th Ranji Trophy title and their first since the 1998-99 season, the Karnataka Government on Sunday announced a reward of Rs.1 Crore for the victorious team.

Announcing the cash prize, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the historic win after 15 years would boost the morale of the players and encourage them to ensure more victories.

“I congratulate the state team for lifting the prestigious trophy for the seventh time and wish them to remain on winning spree in other tournaments,” he said in a statement here.

The team will be felicitated and given the award at a function to be held in Bangalore later this month.

The Karnataka team had earlier pocketed Rs.2 crore as prize money for winning the Ranji Trophy.

The team will also be the recipient of a Rs.1 crore reward from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).

KSCA secretary Brijesh Patel, a former Karnataka and India batsman, said: “It’s a very proud moment for everyone in Karnataka as our team has performed extremely well. The highlight has been the number of outright victories. I congratulate entire team, selectors and support staff. It was the dream of our late president Sri Srikantadatta Narasimharaajawadiyar to see Karnataka winning. We dedicate this victory to the Wadiyar.”

While the Rs.2 crore prize money will be distributed to the players only, the Rs.1 crore award from the state’s governing body will be distributed among the players, administrative staff and support staff.
