West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has taken his place among batting greats by playing his 300th first-class match.

The 38-year-old Guyanese batsman achieved the feat while playing in an English County game for Derbyshire against Sussex on Thursday.

Only six men in the history of the game have reached such a landmark of appearances with a higher average than Chanderpaul’s 56.19.

The list is headed by Denis Compton and also comprises of Sachin Tendulkar, Sir Garfield Sobers, Ranjitsinhji, Graeme Hick and Barry Richards.

Chanderpaul’s accomplishment, however, was marred by one of his meekest dismissals for Derbyshire.

Twice he survived confident appeals for caught behind, and Michael Yardy floored a low chance at second slip off James Anyon, before he succumbed to a delivery from Steve Magoffin that stopped on him to the substitute, Andrew Miller, at extra cover.

Chanderpaul has now scored 22139 first class runs and has a high-score of 303.

He also has notched 66 centuries and 110 half centuries.
