CLT20: Belligerent Broom guides Otago Volts to a convincing 62-run victory
Facing a daunting task of chasing 243 runs to win in 20 overs against Otago Volts, who were powered by a stunning 56-ball 117 from the opener Neil Broom, Perth Scorchers crumbled to a confidence denting defeat at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.
Otago Volts were jolted early in their proceedings as they lost Hamish Rutherford and Brendon McCullum in successive deliveries off the bowling of Joel Paris in the third over of the match.
Captain Derek de Boorder promoted himself and in combination with Neil Broom, stemmed the fall of wickets by stringing together 67 runs in 45 balls to take the score from 9/2 in three overs to 76/3 in 9.5 overs. Boorder laid the foundation with a counterattacking 28-ball 45 runs, for what turned out to be a nightmare for Perth after the arrival of the domestic T20 Talisman Ryan ten Doeschate.
Broom, who was on 29 off 25 balls by the time Adam Voges got rid of Boorder, and Ten Doeschate turned the match on its head by going ballistic against the Perth bowlers. The pair, sparing no bowlers who came in their way, put together a partnership worth 128 runs off just 48 deliveries before Ten Doeschate was dismissed for a 26-ball 66 in the 18th over.
Neil Broom, completing his century in 51 deliveries, was equally destructive to end up with an outstanding 117* off 56 deliveries. Perth Scorchers, whose problems were compounded by their poor bowling and lacklustre fielding, conceded 165 runs in the last 10 overs to give themselves an uphill task of chasing 243 in 20 overs.
In reply, Scorchers started the chase on the worst possible note by losing both Liam Davis and Ashton Agar in the very first over of the innings, which was bowled by Ian Butler. The Australian team were never in the chase as Volts’ bowlers struck at regular intervals.
Voges and Hilton Cartwright delayed the inevitable with a 65-run partnership. Voges holed out for a 27-ball 36 as his team meandered to the finish line, scoring 180/6 in 20 overs. Cartwright, unbeaten on 73 runs, top scored for Perth as Tom Triffitt and Ashton Turner entertained the crowd with short cameos.
