Reports: Bangladesh cricketer Anamul Haque accused of stabbing and assaulting victim with bat

Anamul Haque walks back dismissed during the World Cup 2015 match against Sri Lanka

22-year-old Anamul Haque, who is part of the young brigade of cricketers who form Bangladesh cricket’s bright future, has found himself in serious trouble with the police. A complaint was filed on Sunday night that he, along with his friends, stabbed another youth and beat him up with a bat.

A gory incident was played out in Kushtia in Western Bangladesh on Sunday, sadly involving one of the nation’s young stars. The victim, Motaleb Hossain Bappy, is presently in critical condition in Kushtia General Hospital, as reported by The Daily Star.

The victim’s father, Abdul Halim, complained that the cricketer’s family had been living at a rented apartment on the first floor of his four-storey house on Gourishankar Agarwal Road in Aruapara area of the town for the last four years.

Anamul Haque’s father, Jamil Hossain, got into a heated debate with the landlord’s son on Sunday morning, over an unknown matter, but what has been reported to be a ‘trifling’ one.

Haque, who is playing in the Bangladesh Premier League as wicket keeper batsman for Chittagong Vikings, returned from Dhaka in the evening. Once told about the matter, he went over to Bappy’s house with three of his friends.

At around 9 in the night, they beat up Bappy and stabbed him with a sharp instrument, the complaint states. Anamul’s brother Sajib has also been named in the complaint.

Biplob Kumar Debnath, officer-in-charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, said they will take legal steps after investigating the complaint.

Anamul has been a part of the Bangladesh national team’s scheme of things since 2012, not playing a larger role in the team because Mushfiqur Rahim is hard to displace. Anamul has played 4 Tests and 30 ODIs – also scoring three centuries and three half centuries.

He was also part of the 2015 World Cup team, and played a role in the most successful campaign on the international stage for the country’s cricket team.

Recently having been seen regularly being the opening partner of Tillakaratne Dilshan for the Vikings in the BPL, Anamul’s days have suddenly taken a nosedive into unwanted controversy.
