Controversial New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder fined for dissent

The controversial left-hander is into trouble once again

Controversial New Zealand all-rounder Jesse Ryder got embroiled in another controversy as he was fined $500 for showing displeasure at an umpire’s decision in a club cricket match in New Zealand. According to a report on NZ Herald, the incident happened in club Twenty20 semifinal when Ryder was bowling for Petone-Eastbourne against Karori.

The report also said that Wellington Cricket has confirmed the punishment served to the southpaw. Cricket Wellington chief executive Peter Clinton said Ryder was found guilty of dissenting an umpire's decision and fined $500.

The offence was at level two, which lies in between less serious level one and more serious level four offences. A leg-before-wicket appeal was turned down by former international umpire Evan Watkin and a frustrated Ryder made his displeasure clear at the verdict.

After the match, the umpires filed a formal report about the incident which led to the disciplinary action against Ryder. The mercurial all-rounder last played for New Zealand in 2014.

In the news for all the wrong reasons

Ryder’s name has always been in the news for all the wrong reasons. His drinking habit has often landed him in trouble. He was involved in an ugly brawl in a pub which saw him going into coma after being attacked twice in quick succession. Ryder suffered severe head injuries after the assaults.

He somehow got back into the New Zealand squad but his habit of drinking again trapped him. A night’s drinking before a test match cost him his place in the squad. There were several other reports against him too.

It is believed that Ryder has since expressed his desire to make a comeback into the international cricket once again after some solid performances for Essex in the English county cricket. He has also approached the Black Caps’ team management asking for another chance. He reportedly had met New Zealand coach Mike Hesson before New Zealand’s first test against Australia in 2016. However, things do not look too rosy for the burly left-hander regarding his return to the national squad.

Ryder has a history of behavioural breaches throughout his short career. Despite being extremely talented, his career never got going because of his disciplinary issues. Ryder has played 18 Tests, 48 ODIs and 22 T20Is for New Zealand till date. His recent domestic form has been superlative as he was the second highest run-scorer in the Ford Trophy, New Zealand's domestic one-day competition.

He amassed 506 runs at an average of 56 for Central Districts. He scored a crucial 62 in the final, which Central Districts won against Canterbury by 156 runs. But controversies don't seem to leave this left-hander as he is into another one again. This recent incident won’t definitely help his comeback trail for sure.
