Criticising SLC lands Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara in trouble
As if the resignation of Paul Farbrace, who recently coached them to the 2014 World Cup T20 triumph in Bangladesh was not enough of a problem for Sri Lanka, there now appears to be a disagreement between the Sri Lankan Cricket Board and the senior players Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara over their retirement from the T20 format and the subsequent criticism of certain board members.
SLC has claimed that it will take appropriate action against the players for their critical remarks on board officials. According to NDTV, a disciplinary committee will look into the “unsubstantiated statements” made by the two stalwarts. The two players, who were a part of the winning World T20 team, have been condemned for revealing their retirement plans to the media prior to a proper dialogue with the officials.
Both Jayawardene and Sangakkara, since then, have confirmed their international retirements from the shortest format of the game. They will be available for the various domestic leagues played around the world, though.
The players, however, in their defence, said that they were only replying to media queries and did not intend to do so.
SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga and chief executive Ashley de Silva appear to be upset with Jayawardene and Sangakara’s conduct after the World Cup victory, especially with the remarks made at the Sri Lankan airport news conference to welcome the World Champions.
