CSK playing 11 from Doug Bollinger's IPL debut in 2010 - where are they now?

Former Australian left-arm pacer Doug Bollinger is celebrating his 43rd birthday on Wednesday, July 24. Having debuted for Australia in 2009, he went on to play 12 Tests, 39 ODIs, and nine T20Is. While he featured in only a limited number of international matches due to heavy competition for places in the Australian team, Bollinger possesses an impressive record in all three formats.

The medium pacer picked up 50 scalps in Test matches at an average of 25.92, with two five-wicket hauls. In ODIs, he claimed 62 wickets at an average of 23.90 and an economy rate of 4.57, with two five-fers. Bollinger also picked up nine wickets in T20Is at an economy rate of 7.11 and a strike rate of 23.3.

The 43-year-old also played 27 IPL matches, claiming 37 wickets at an economy rate of 7.22 and a strike rate of 15.57. He made a sensational IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in April 2010. Bollinger registered figures of 2-15 from four overs as CSK beat RR by 23 runs.

On the occasion of the former Aussie left-armer's birthday, we look back at where his CSK teammates from his IPL debut are now.


Openers: Murali Vijay & Matthew Hayden

Murali Vijay smacked a sensational 127 off 56 balls in Bollinger's IPL debut match. His superb knock featured eight fours and 11 sixes. He played his last IPL game for CSK against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dubai in September 2020. Vijay announced his retirement from international cricket in January 2023. He represented India Maharajas in the 2022-23 Legends League Cricket.

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden was dismissed for 34 off 21 in Bollinger's IPL debut game. He retired from all forms of cricket in September 2012. Hayden was the batting coach of the Pakistan team for the 2021 T20 World Cup. The 52-year-old is also a commentator.


Middle and lower-order batters: Suresh Raina, Albie Morkel, MS Dhoni, S Badrinath, Srikkanth Anirudha

Former India batter Suresh Raina played his last match for CSK against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Abu Dhabi in October 2021. He retired from international cricket in August 2020, the same day MS Dhoni announced his retirement. He quit all forms of cricket in September 2022. The 37-year-old was part of the India Champions squad that won the World Championship of Legends recently.

Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel, who smashed a brilliant 62 off 34 in Bollinger's IPL debut, played his last T20 match in December 2018. The 43-year-old retired from all forms of cricket in January 2019. Post-retirement, he joined Namibia as an assistant coach.

MS Dhoni captained CSK in Bollinger's IPL debut game. He was dismissed for a golden duck in that match. Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but continues to play in the IPL. He led CSK to a record-equaling fifth IPL title in 2023. Dhoni gave up captaincy in IPL 2024, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the franchise. Chennai, however, failed to qualify for the playoffs.

A Tamil Nadu domestic legend, Subramaniam Badrinath played a handful of matches for India. He retired from all forms of cricket in August 2018. He is now a cricket analyst. His recent comments on a YouTube show over team selection for the Sri Lanka tour went viral. Badrinath wondered whether one needs to have a bad guy image to get selected for the Indian team.

Srikkanth Anirudha, who made his T20 debut in 2007, played his last match in the format in 2019. He played 71 T20 games, scoring over 1200 runs. Anirudha made his debut as a commentator during SA20 last year.


Bowlers: Muttiah Muralitharan, Shadab Jakati, Sudeep Tyagi

Sri Lanka's spin bowling legend Muttiah Muralitharan has taken up coach post-retirement. He was appointed Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach in 2015 and has worked as a consultant for the Australian men's cricket team. Last month, it was reported that he plans to invest ₹1,400 crore in a beverages unit.

Shadab Jakati registered figures of 0-37 in Bollinger's IPL debut game. His last T20 was for Goa against Andhra in January 2018. The former left-arm spinner announced his retirement from all forms in December 2019. He represented Urbanrisers Hyderabad in Legends League Cricket in December 2023.

Sudeep Tyagi (0-45) also went wicketless in Bollinger's IPL debut game. The pacer's last T20 match was for Dambulla Viiking in the 2020-21 Lanka Premier League. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November 2020.
